Shared Sheet

If three oxygens of each tetrahedron are shared, sheet struetures form (Fig. 16.4d). This is the basis of clays and micas. The additional M attaches itself preferentially to one side of the sheet - the side with the spare oxygens on it. Then the sheet is polarised it has a net positive charge on one surface and a negative charge on the other. This interacts strongly with water, attracting a layer of water between the sheets. This is what makes clays plastic the sheets of silicate slide over each other readily, lubricated... [Pg.171]

Table 6 shows the sales estimates for principal film and sheet products for the year 1990 (14). Low density polyethylene films dominate the market in volume, followed by polystyrene and the vinyls. High density polyethylene, poly(ethylene terephthalate), and polypropylene are close in market share and complete the primary products. A number of specialty resins are used to produce 25,000—100,000 t of film or sheet, and then there are a large number of high priced, high performance materials that serve niche markets. The original clear film product, ceUophane, has faUen to about 25,000 t in the United States, with only one domestic producer. When the ratio MO/SiOj is a little less than 2/1, silica dimers form (Fig. 16.4b). One oxygen is shared between two tetrahedra it is called a bridging oxygen. This is the first step in the polymerisation of the monomer to give chains, sheets and networks. [Pg.171]

This motif is called a beta-alpha-beta motif (Figure 2.17) and is found as part of almost every protein structure that has a parallel p sheet. For example, the molecule shown in Figure 2.10b, triosephosphate isomerase, is entirely built up by repeated combinations of this motif, where two successive motifs share one p strand. Alternatively, it can be regarded as being built up from four consecutive p-a-p-a motifs. [Pg.28]

Random interface models for ternary systems share the feature with the Widom model and the one-order-parameter Ginzburg-Landau theory (19) that the density of amphiphiles is not allowed to fluctuate independently, but is entirely determined by the distribution of oil and water. However, in contrast to the Ginzburg-Landau approach, they concentrate on the amphiphilic sheets. Self-assembly of amphiphiles into monolayers of given optimal density is premised, and the free energy of the system is reduced to effective free energies of its internal interfaces. In the same spirit, random interface models for binary systems postulate self-assembly into bilayers and intro-... [Pg.667]

II. F. Sheets of Vacuum Oil Company, who learned of Houdi y s work and shared his vision for converting vaporized petroleum to gasoline catalytically, invited him to the United States. After a successful trial run, Houdry moved his laboratory and associates from France to Paulsboro, New Jersey, to form a joint venture, Iloudiy Process Corporation, with Vacuum Oil Company. In that year Vacuum Oil Company merged with Standard Oil of New York to become Socony-Vacuum Company (much later Mobil Oil Corporation). [Pg.632]

The trigonal prisms are believed to be partially occupied by residual lithium ions. Figure 6. To illustrate the correct approach, consider applications in which a material is used in sheet form, as in automotive body panels, and suppose that the service requirements are for stiffness and strength in flexure. First imagine four panels with identical dimensions that were manufactured from the four materials given in Table 3-1. Their flexural stiffnesses and strengths depend directly on the respective material s modulus and strength. All the other factors are shared in common with the other materials, there being no significantly different Poisson ratios. Thus, the relative panel properties are identical with the relative material properties illustrated in Fig. 3-3. Obviously, the metal panels will be stiffer and... [Pg.135]

ChEs possess the a/ 3-fold structure, which is shared with other esterases and non-catalytic proteins such as thyroglobulin, glutactin, neurotactin, gliotactin and neuroligins, all of these include a single ChE domain. Both ChEs are ellipsoidal molecules of 45-60-65 A3. Their structure consists of a central, highly twisted, 8-12-stranded (3-sheet, in which most strands are parallel, flanked on both sides by a-helices. Studies have indicated three major domains within the protein ... [Pg.358]

There are a variety of silicates, which can be viewed as various arrangements of tetrahedral oxoanions of silicon in which each Si—O bond has considerable covalent character. The differences in properties between the various silicates are related to the number of negative charges on each tetrahedron, the number of corner O atoms shared with other tetrahedra, and the manner in which chains and sheets of the linked tetrahedra lie together. Differences in the internal structures of... [Pg.732]

What is the empirical formula of a potassium silicate in which the silicate tetrahedra share (a) two O atoms and form a chain or (b) three O atoms and form a sheet In each case, there are single negative charges on the unshared O atoms. [Pg.740]
