Setting Out on a Journey

Behind them lies a landscape with a town or fortress on a steep hillside in the distance, with a mountain still further away. They are standing just outside a gate to the city, implying that alchemy requires one to step outside the familiar structure of one s life and set out on a journey Their relationship suggests that, although this journey will be solitary in the sense of being unique to the individual, it is undertaken with the counsel and companionship of one who has returned from his own journey... 

During the Middle Ages, if a person was to set out on a long journey he would entrust his health and safety to an elder tree. If the tree flourished, so would the person. If it withered and died, so would the traveler. These trees were regarded as guardian trees. In Copenhagen, there is an old sailors section where many homes still have a protective elder tree. 

Believing that it was indeed possible to make gold and silver from lead, Trismosin set out in 1473 on a journey to discover the secret of this art. After traveling for eighteen months, he spent a year in... 

Science and engineering have dominated world events and world culture for at least 150 years. The blind and near blind have been made to see. The deaf and near deaf have been made to hear. The ill have been made well. The weak have been made strong. Radio, television and the internet have made the world seem smaller. And some of us have left the planet. Computers have played an essential role in all of these developments they are now ubiquitous. These miraculous events happened by design— not by accident. Individuals and teams set out to accomplish goals. They systematically studied and analyzed the natural world around us. They designed and tested new tools. Human beings have embarked on a journey that cannot be reversed. We hope that you can participate in and contribute to these exciting times. 

Approximately 5000 years ago, a man set out to climb the Tyrolean Alps on the Austrian-Italian border. At death, he was between 40 and 50 years old and suffered from several medical ailments. Some scientists believe he was caught in a heavy snowfall, fell asleep, and froze to death. Others suppose he was murdered during his journey. Either way, his body was covered with snow almost immediately and, due to the freezing weather, rapidly became a mummy - The Iceman . In 1991, his body was re-exposed and discovered by climbers in the Otzal Alps, explaining why the Iceman , as he was called, was given the nickname Otzi (or, more commonly, as just Otzi). 

The end-of-chapter problems should set you on your way but they are not the end of the journey to understanding. You are probably reading this text as part of a university course and you should find out what kind of examination problems your university uses and practise them too. Your tutor will be able to advise you on suitable problems for each stage of your development. 

A journal is a book in which you write your secret thoughts, record all your fun adventures, and draw pictures of things you see. A journal can also be used to record, or set down in writing, things you ve learned or discovered. John James Audubon used a journal to record notes and draw pictures of the birds of North America. Wilderness explorers Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) and William Clark (1770-1838) used journals to record what they saw on their journeys out west in 1804-1806. Many things we ve learned about history and our natural world come from historical journals. Maybe someday the Nature Journal you make will become an important piece of natural history ... 

While familiarisation with the area to be visited is important, an essential part of the risk assessment procedure, that is often overlooked, is familiarisation with the mode of transport to be used. If this is a self-drive minibus, prior to the journey, a check should be carried out on basic safety features such as tyres, lights, windscreen washers/wipers, brakes, availability of first aid kit and fire extinguisher, fluid levels, doors (operate freely and close securely) and warning instruments. Driver effectiveness and fatigue is also influenced by poor driving position and conditions so, before setting off the driver should adjust the seat, the mirrors and check that they can reach all the essential controls. 

The problem that this book sets out to solve can be formulated very simply. Given a set of chemical reactions with known kinetics, what is the best reactor that can be used to carry out the set of reactions. As easy as the question is to ask, the answer is not obvious, as on the face of it there are an infinite number of possibilities. What this preface will do is to outline the 50-year journey to solve this problem. This history also embodies a cautionary tale for those doing (and wanting to do) research. 

Results, analysis, and discussion. Looking at the diagram (Fig. 5.13), we see clearly that the ship encountered 15 ships on its travel. Why For example, when a ship starting out from Le Havre completed 6 days of travel (noon of the sixth day), another ship was setting out from New York for Le Havre at the same time (Fig. 5.13). These two ships meet at midnight (x), from which you can infer that this ship encounters other ships not only at noon everyday but also at midnight. In addition, it will meet a ship from New York when the journey starts and also when it is ending its journey. In Fig. 5.13, you can count the encounters, which total 15. Surprised ...
