Freezing weather

Most substances have a slightly smaller molar volume as a solid than as a liquid substances generally decrease in volume when they freeze. Water is the notable exception it expands (increases in molar volume) upon freezing. That is why closed containers holding water and other aqueous solutions will break in freezing weather. Although iron is much more dense overall than the compounds in Table 12-1, and its molar volumes are much less than those of benzene and carbon tetrachloride, iron still behaves normally. The molar volume of liquid iron is still greater than that of solid iron. [Pg.191]

Approximately 5000 years ago, a man set out to climb the Tyrolean Alps on the Austrian-Italian border. At death, he was between 40 and 50 years old and suffered from several medical ailments. Some scientists believe he was caught in a heavy snowfall, fell asleep, and froze to death. Others suppose he was murdered during his journey. Either way, his body was covered with snow almost immediately and, due to the freezing weather, rapidly became a mummy - The Iceman . In 1991, his body was re-exposed and discovered by climbers in the Otzal Alps, explaining why the Iceman , as he was called, was given the nickname Otzi (or, more commonly, as just Otzi). [Pg.385]

Towers that operate in freezing weather required special consideration to provide dependable service and to prevent damage from freezing and ice accumulation. The most prevalent winter operating problem of water cooling towers is the formation of ice on the louvers to the extent of seriously, or even totally, restricting the air flow. [Pg.142]

The article features a two-stage evaporative cooling system with cooling tower and dry basin for freezing weather tower operation. Design conditions and visual problems are discussed together with cooling tower enclosure, structural and vibration considerations. [Pg.303]

In using wet methods due allowance should be made for freezing weather and possible accident hazards. The use of wetting agents may in many cases aid in controlling dust and also cut down on the volume of water required. Except in the case of drilling, no fixed amounts of water can be specified since this is dependent upon the size of the operation and other variable factors. [Pg.431]

Because a solute lowers the freezing point of water, compounds such as sodium chloride and calcium chloride are often spread on streets and sidewalks to prevent ice from forming in freezing weather. Of course, if the outside temperature is lower than the freezing point of the resulting salt solution, ice forms anyway. So this procedure is not effective at extremely cold temperatures. [Pg.847]

Excavation and concrete work in freezing weather can be very expensive and should be avoided. In some instances the construction site may have to be shut down during the winter months. [Pg.93]

Cold, or in some cases cool temperatures, also damages herbaceous plants. If you plant com or beans too early, these heat-loving plants suffer during extended cool weather, even though the temperature never dips below freezing. Sub-freezing weather in the spring... [Pg.380]

Conversely, if too much carbonate is withdrawn by tectonics, by subduction or precipitation, then the ocean freezes. Weathering ceases. Carbon dioxide precipitation stops and the gas builds up in the air until part of the ocean melts and degasses more carbon dioxide, and the world switches from total glaciation to partial glaciation. Indeed, intuitively an inorganic world might be expected to see-saw between these two states, with rare excursions into a plume-driven moist greenhouse state. [Pg.302]

Fever The creature has abnormally high body temperature, even in freezing weather. Does little to effect game play, but is a good indication of certain illnesses or toxication. +2 bonus to all Healing/Medical Skills. [Pg.7]

In freezing weather float a ball on the pond to prevent all the water icing over. Take out the ball to create an air hole for pond creatures. [Pg.329]

Interestingly, water expands when it freezes. That is, one gram of ice at 0 °C has a greater volume than one gram of liquid water at 0 °C. This has very important practical implications. For instance, water in a confined space can break its container when it freezes and expands. This accounts for the bursting of water pipes and engine blocks that are left unprotected in freezing weather. [Pg.449]

External events include earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and freezing weather. Any of these can cause multiple failures. [Pg.34]

In addition, wet or freezing weather conditions can raise the risk of frostbite and trench foot among those who work out of doors. [Pg.56]
