The authors and editors of this book wish to acknowledge the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Electric Power Research Institute, who sponsored a Society of Enviromnental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) workshop in September 2003 in Pensacola, Florida. More than 30 international experts gathered to discuss and propose a framework for a national mercury monitoring program to evaluate the effectiveness of mercury emissions controls on mercury concentrations in the enviromnent. This book and a companion journal publication (Mason et al. 2005) are the products of the workshop and subsequent efforts. 

We also wish to thank the Society of Envirorunental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), as well as Greg Schiefer, in particirlar, who did an excellent job in providing the venue and organizational expertise for this project. 

In 2005, a comprehensive comparison of LCIA toxicity characterization models was initiated by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) in their life cycle initiative. The main objectives of this effort were to [9] (1) identify specific sources of differences between the models results and structure (2) detect the indispensable model components and (3) build a scientific consensus model from them, representing recommended practice.
