In 2000, the world trade of sesame seed was 620,000 MT, which was 21.5% of the total production. Japan imported 165,000 MT (26% of the world imports) and was the largest importer of sesame seed. South Korea was the second largest importer (70,000 MT) followed by United States (49,000 MT), Taiwan (35,000 MT) and Egypt (34,000 MT). Although China and India are the top two sesame seed producers, most of the seeds are consumed locally. Only 12 15% of the sesame seeds produced in India were exported in the past ten years. China was the world number one sesame seeds exporting country, which exported... [Pg.1178]

In other parts of the world, the market is very different. For example, in southeast Asia the largest demand is for refreshing products, such as water ices. Ice cream comes in flavours that seem very strange and exotic to Western palates - for example green tea and red bean ice cream in Japan, sweet corn ice cream in Malaysia, chilli ice cream in Indonesia and sesame seed ice cream in Korea. [Pg.11]

Sesamum indicum is an herbaceous annual that reaches about 1 m in height (Figure 9.1.29). Sesame oil, with an annual production of 860,000mto in 2007, is higher in quantity than linseed oil and safflower oil. Traditionally, China, India, Sudan, Burma and Uganda are the world s major sesame seed producing... [Pg.202]

WORLD AND U.S. PRODUCTION. World produc tion of sesame seed totals about 2,000,000 metric tons annually and the six leading nations, by rank, are India, China, Myanmar, Mexico, Nigeria, and Sudan. [Pg.963]

Sesame has declined in international trade due to a market preference for other oilseeds that are cheaper and easier to produce, such as groundnut. World trade tends to be in whole seed with only a small amount moving as oil and cake. There is great value in dehulling if the product is to be used as a foodstuff, as removal of the hull lowers the oxalic and phytic acid levels in the meal. The presence of these... [Pg.2375]

On an industrial scale, the most commonly processed raw material is oil seeds. A summary of the important typical raw materials is given in Table 3.26. In terms of world oil production, the major oils are soybean, pahn, rapeseed, sunflower, cotton, peanut, coconut, pahn kernel, sesame and ohve oils. A large number of other oils have only local significance, and a number of other oils are obtained solely for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and oleochemical purposes (linseed, castor and periUa oils in particular). Oils from the pericarp (pulp) of fruits, such as pahn and ohve oils, are obtained by specific procedures, unlike the oils from seeds. [Pg.129]
