Service to humanity

Green ethics, or the social responsibility to improve the environment, was another curriculum item that came up in discussion several times. In addition to many of the attendees who deem green ethics important, it is also information the students want. Vanasupa said that many students are very attracted to the idea of making a difference and service to humanity. According to Vanasupa, ethics have been a peripheral subject in many schools and having the material as an integral part of the curriculum is a goal with a variety of solutions available. 

Mevacor, which Merck brought out in 1987, was as close as a pharmaceutical company could get to the perfect product. It targeted a serious and widespread problem—high cholesterol, which can lead to strokes and coronary heart disease—so it was a great service to humanity. There was no other prescription treatment, so it had a huge market to itself. The condition was chronic, so people would need to keep buying the pill for years. And it was a malady that affected middle-class Americans, so they could afford an expensive drug. 

I have long since been convinced that business is one way to be of tremendous service to humanity and a way to worship the God-given ability to be self-sufficient and to share love. Springtime in my business makes me remember this. And so when I hit a serious crisis in my business, I force myself to look deeper, past the illusion of my business as just a place to work and make money, and I see the crisis for what it really is not the signal of the end of my enterprise, but a signal in the changing of the seasons.

Microbiocides may be toxic to humans therefore, care must be taken when used. When selecting the microbiocide, the field engineer can obtain pertinent information on chemicals from the service company providing the chemicals. The microbiocide selected must be compatible with the system in which it is being used. Some chemicals such as quaternary amines have dual functions one as microbiocides and the other as film-forming corrosion inhibitors. Insufficient concentrations of this type of chemical may not be enough to coat the whole surface of metal and can cause pitting corrosion. The selection must also depend on chemicals that can produce the desired control in minimum time limits and...

We do not know for sure whether either mirex or chlordecone causes cancer in humans. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has determined that mirex and chlordecone may reasonably be expected to be carcinogens. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that mirex and chlordecone are possibly carcinogenic to humans. The EPA has not classified mirex or chlordecone as to carcinogenicity. In rodents, mirex causes liver, adrenal, and blood cancer. Chlordecone also causes liver cancer in rodents, but because of problems with these animal studies, more information is necessary to be sure.
