Service Delay

Failure costs rework and bad planning, nonproductive times by errors in production, time to examine the causes and consequences of failures, lack of work and accidents, obsolete resources, deficient utilization of resources and external services, delays of supplies, inefficient communication and affections in computer systems, contract errors, bhhng errors, loss of income, imcollectable debt, discounts of fees, customer complaints, time consumed in internal complaints and solving the problem escalated by customer, penalties, loss of market and company reputation. [Pg.1020]

Commuter rails are used in many North American cities. Many times, mechanical failure is the main cause for delays in commuter rail service. In fact, according to Nelson and O Neil [20], approximately one-tenth of all commuter rail service delay minutes relate to mechanical causes such as the following ... [Pg.78]

The improved financial health of the industry has reduced, but not eliminated, concerns about myopic behavior. In the mid-1990s the Union Pacific Railroad acquired the Chicago and North Western Railway and the Southern Pacific System. The railroad grew in size by eighty percent. In an effort to recoup some of the costs of acquisition, and to demonstrate to shareholders that the acquisitions had improved profitability, the railroad took several cost-saving actions. Some of these actions, such as a reduction in the number of dispatchers and supervisors, had safety implications. Fortunately, from a societal point of view, this attempt to cheat backfired because the reduction in preventive effort quickly led to a visible increase in service delays and accidents. Shippers and the government became aware of the change in quality, and demanded that the railroad take action to remedy the situation. [Pg.117]

Although the PMF of the service delay is the same for periodic and event-driven safety messages, their queueing delays are different due to different arrival patterns for the two different types of safety messages. [Pg.56]

This chapter presents a detailed delivery delay analysis for VANET safety messages broadcast on the CCH, based on the VeMAC protocol described in Chap. 3. Both queueing and service delays of periodic and event-driven safety messages are analyzed, by taking into consideration the size and the arrival pattern of each type of... [Pg.69]
