Morphine is self-administered by Friedrich Wilhelm Sertiirner and is named after Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams, after he experiences its narcotic effects. [Pg.341]

The beginning of alkaloid chemistry is usually considered to be 1805 when F.W. Sertiirner first isolated morphine. Sertiirner s claims to have already obtained morphine in 1806 seem largely unsubstantiated, since he probably isolated what became later known as meconic acid and he unequivocally reported the isolation of a narcotic opium basic compound only in 1817. Before the discovery of morphine the existence of organic bases had not been suspected. Sertiirner (1817) showed that morphine forms salts with acids. Gay-Lussac then caused Robiquet to repeat and confirm the experiments, and before 1820 Pelletier and Caventou discovered strychnine, brucine, quinine, cinchonine, and veratrine. [Pg.241]

The first alkaloid to be obtained in the pure crystaUine state was morphine. Friedrich Wilhelm Sertiirner (1783-1841) isolated morphine in 1805. He recognized that the material possessed basic character and he, therefore, classified it as a vegetable alkali (that is, a base with its origin in the plant kingdom). Thus, compounds with similar properties ultimately became known as alkaloids. The term"alkaloid"was introduced for the first time by an apothecary, Meissner, in Halle in 1819. [Pg.230]
