Riboflavin was discovered by Isenberg and Szent-Gyorgyi [210] to form a complex with serotonin, colored at low temperature in solution and the solid state. Unprotonated nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) forms a charge-transfer complex with serotonin creatinine sulfate [211]. Douzou [212] noted that decreasing temperature caused a partially reversible increase in optical density of the NAD-serotonin complex. He claims that aggregation of the complex constituents is followed by oxidation. Serotonin complexes of pteridines are also known [1]. 

Katon et al. (1968) have extended their low-temperature work to other types of compounds and have given a description of the low-temperature cell they used. Other carbohydrates were examined (e.g., raffinose, sucrose, fructose, arabinose, xylose, lactose, mannose, maltose, galactose, rhamnose, cellobiose, and melibiose) as well as a noncrystalline trypsin (little or no change at the lower temperature), urea, diphenyl, stearoyl chloride, cholesterol (Fig. 3.20), cholesteryl acetate, serotonin creatinine sulfate, sodium creatinine phosphate hexahydrate, daunomycinone, carnosine, and... 

The use of mixtures of drugs to obtain greater protection than can be obtained by single components has continued to make progress. Malsln and his collaborators have used mixtures of well-known antlradlatlon drugs (MEA) AET, cysteine, reduced glutathione, serotonin creatinine sulfate) in mice to obtain dose reduction factors of 2.8, with decreased toxicity. 

The protective action of tissue anoxia has been reviewed.Because protection of mammals by serotonin, PAPP, etc. has been ascribed to their vasoconstrictive activity with consequent tissue anoxia, it was surprising to learn that the serotonin-creatinine sulfate complex protected both planarla and bean sprouts,where vasoconstriction cannot be a factor. 

An amount of 150 mg. serotonin creatinine sulfate was infused into a 10-kg. dog over a period of 1 hour. At various time intervals blood was collected by means of a cannula inserted into the carotid artery, and the platelets were Isolated and assayed. 

Twenty milligrams per kilogram of serotonin creatinine sulfate was infused over a period of 1 hour into a dog. Essentially all the serotonin in blood is in the platelets.
