In January 1903 Einstein married Mileva Marie, (of Grcck-Catholic Serbian descent), a fellow student at the ETI I. In 1902 the couple had a daughter out of wedlock, Lieserl, whose fate remains unknown, and after marriage they had two sons, Hans Albert (1904), who became a distinguished professor of hydraulic engineering in Berkeley, California, and Eduard (1910), a gifted child who became a student of medicine in Zurich but who then turned severely schizophrenic and died in a psychiatric hospital. [Pg.383]

How is it possible to explain these dramatic changes in Earth s climate The answer to that question was provided by the Serbian mathematician Milutin Milankovitch (1879-1958). Over a period of... [Pg.82]

Geologists in the nineteenth century deduced that the Earth has experienced several ice ages, during which the ice sheets that cover the poles today reached much farther afield. In 1930 the Serbian mathematician Milutin Milankovitch showed how changes in the shape of the Earth s orbit around the Sun could trigger an ice age by altering the seasonal distribution of sunlight at the planet s surface. There are three cyclic variations in the orbit, with periods of 23,000, 41,000, and 100,000 years. The interplay of these Milankovitch cycles produces a complex but predictable and slow variation in climate over hundreds of thousands of years. [Pg.129]

Portland cement clinker potential phase composition is presented in Table 4. It could be seen that the C3A content in the clinker was 9.46% which is important for the cement hydration rate and cement sulfate resistance. Common Portland cement is not resistant to the sulfate influence because of the significant C3A content, whose hydrates react with sulfate ions resulting in expansive compounds. Portland cement with the higher resistance to sulfates must have low C3A content. Moderate to high content of mineral alite - C3S (54.72%) is usual for the Serbian cement plants and enables the addition of higher quantities of mineral admixtures without influencing the quality of final cement. [Pg.178]

An Ar stabilized direct current (DC) arc plasma at atmospheric pressure was employed to determine Cu, Fe, and Mn in wine [81]. The experimental conditions were optimized by studying the lateral distribution of the spectral line intensities of the elements assessed in aqueous and ethanolic-aqueous solutions. The method was applied to quantify Cu, Fe, and Mn in six wines from three Serbian grape-growing regions and the accuracy was checked by FA AS. [Pg.473]
