Sensitivity checks

Sensors should always be evaluated in vitro. While this is clearly not a substitute for in vivo testing, it is easier to diagnose fundamental problems without the complications that the biological milieu introduces. Furthermore, if they do not work reliably in vitro, they will not work in vivo. In addition to the linear dynamic range mentioned above, stability and reproducibility of characteristics in sensor production are very important. Linearity can be characterized by comparing the sensitivities (slope of the dose/response curve) at 5 and 15 mM glucose, assuming that they should not deviate by more than 10%. Stability can be measured in several different ways. Sensors can be stored dry and at room temperature between periodic sensitivity checks. This tends to... 

In course of subsequent work Bubeck, Tieke, and Wegner discovered that the action spectrum for photopolymerization of undoped diacetylene multilayers extends into the visible provided some polymer formed in course of previous UV-irradiation is present. Since obviously excitation of the polymer can sensitize the reaction this effect has been termed self-sensitization. Checking the absorption spectrum of the polymer produced via self-sensitization assured that the final product is identical with the product obtained under UV excitation of the monomer. Later work by Braunschweig and Bassler demonstrated, that the effect is not confined to multilayer systems but is also present in partially polymerized single crystalline TS-6, albeit with lower efficiency. Interestingly, the action spectrum of self-sensitization follows the action spectrum for excitation of an electron from the valence band of the polymer backbone to the conduction band rather than the excitonic absorption spectrum of the polymer which is the dominant spectral feature in the visible (see Fig. 21). The quantum yield is independent of the electric field, whereas in a onedimensional system the yield of free carriers, determined by thermal dissociation of optically produced, weakly bound geminate electron-hole pairs, is an linear function of an applied electric field 29.30,32,129) Apparently, the sensitizing action does not... 

Even after washing, the oxides may not be entirely free from adsorbed impurities. This applies particularly to anions such as sulphate and carbonate, which have a high affinity for the oxide surface. Even chloride and nitrate may be difficult to remove completely. A sensitive check for most of the adsorbed anionic impurities is provided by IR spectroscopy (see p. 51).

To evaluate the results according to the standard a completeness check a sensitivity check and a consistency check of the identified processes or life phases must be carried out. In that a double integration is involved and that a theoretical instead of experimental single particle cross-section is employed, this agreement between theory and experiment should not be construed as a sensitive check on the momentum distribution of nucleons. Their calculation should be considered as indicating the feasibility of interpreting photomeson production from complex nuclei in terms of purely kinematical factors. If the person being fit tested reports detecting the irritant smoke at any time, the test is failed. The person being retested must repeat the entire sensitivity check and fit test procedure. 

If a response is produced during this second sensitivity check, then the fit test is passed. 

To examine the importance of our initial assumptions we decreased the value of each parameter by 1 percent, holding all other parameters constant, and calculated the percentage change in the wage and the compensation for risk at each level of workplace safety. Table 3-3 presents the results of our sensitivity checking exercise as impact elasticities calculated from the continuous version of the hedonic model.

It provides a sensitive check for pyroxene entry as a crystallizing phase. V-Cr and V-Al substitutional trends provide a good control for the positions of both pyroxene and plagioclase in the crystallization sequence. The positive V-Al sympathetic trend and the negative V-Cr relationship of early spinels (Fig. 5a b) demonstrate the unique chemistry of those early chromites and indicate crystallization before pyroxene and plagioclase. The trends for chromites with the second chemical zoning trend and late ulvbspinel are antipathetic both for V-Cr and V-Al (Fig. 

One must also realize that except for elements, stable compounds which burn cleanly in oxygen, and small molecules or radicals whose electronic spectra in dissociative regions have been thoroughly analyzed, standard enthalpies of formation must be evaluated through difficult experiments subject to interpretive difficulties. This means that the largest errors—by far—in thermochemical calculations arise from uncertain enthalpies of formation. Fortunately, it is a fairly straightforward matter to modify the polynomial representations to change enthalpies of formation when new experimental results become available or sensitivity checks on AH 29s e to be made (cf. comments in Appendix C).
