Self observations prompting

Inhalation Prompt medical attention is mandatory in all cases of overexposure. Rescue personnel should be equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus. Conscious victims should be carried (not assisted) to an uncontaminated area and inhale fresh air with supplemental oxygen. Quick removal from the contaminated area is most important. Keep the patient warm, quiet, and under competent medical observation until the danger of delayed pulmonary edema has passed (at least for 72 h). Any physical exertion during this period should be discouraged as it may increase the severity of the pulmonary edema or chemical pneumonitis. Bed rest is indicated. Unconscious persons should be moved to an uncontaminated area, and if breathing has stopped, administer artificial resuscitation and supplemental oxygen. Once respiration has been restored they should be treated as above. [Pg.65]

The observation that the wavelength of light is linked to the particle-like momentum of a photon prompted de Broglie to postulate the likelihood of an inverse situation whereby particulate objects may exhibit wave-like properties. Hence, an electron with linear momentum p could under appropriate conditions exhibit a wavelength A = h/p. The demonstration that an electron beam was diffracted by periodic crystals in exactly the same way as X-radiation confirmed de Broglie s postulate and provided an alternative description of the electronic stationary states on an atom. Instead of an accelerated particle the orbiting electron could be described as a standing wave. To avoid self-destruction by wave interference it is necessary to assume an... [Pg.33]

The observed ease of formation of [3]catenane 117 is especially remarkable in view of the complete failure to achieve the formation of the parent tetracationic macrocycle from 115 and 116, in the absence of crown ether 114. This result prompted the following important conclusion in the cited paper, it is easier to construct molecular assemblies than it is to create one of their components by itself. The message is a simple but exciting one — the prospects for self-assembly, as a synthetic paradigm, are extremely encouraging . ... [Pg.351]

The tunable luminescence of the self-passivated organic QCNs and observation of interesting optoelectronic properties like up-conversion, have prompted the researchers to use them as replacement in OLEDs based on their inorganic counterparts. [Pg.206]

The amazing water repellent properties of many biological surfaces, especially plant leaves, have prompted great research interest. With certain leaves, when water droplets fall on the surface, they can easily pick up contaminants, roll off the surface and thereby clean the leaves. Because the first observation of this self-cleaning phenomenon occurred on lotus leaves, the effect is generally termed lotus effect . Detailed inspection of the leaves showed that micrometer and submicrometer structures as well as hydrophobic materials exist on the leaf surface. The combination of these factors leads to superhydrophobicity. Wenzel [1,2] showed that surface... [Pg.297]

The detailed structural information on the cytochrome c system, its biological relevance and the inability to offer an adequate explanation of its features with the current theories of electron transfer, prompted us to apply an alternative model to predict and rationalize the electron transfer rates observed. In the following, we present the intersecting-state model and apply it to the calculation of the self-exdiange rates of a synthetic analogue of a cytochrome and to cytochrome c itself. The model is then applied to rationalize the photochemical and thermal ET reactions between metallocytochrome c and metallouroporphyrins. Our calculations show that these systems are amenable to a quantitative explanation by the theoretical model we employ. [Pg.208]

The surprising implication is that Dirac s equation does not allow of a self-consistent single-particle interpretation, although it has been used to calculate approximate relativistic corrections to the Schrodinger energy spectrum of hydrogen. The obvious reason is that a 4D point particle is without duration and hence undefined. An alternative description of elementary units of matter becomes unavoidable. Prompted by such observation, Dirac [3] re-examined the classical point model of the electron only to find that it has three-dimensional size, with an interior that allows superluminal signals. It all points at a wave structure with phase velocity > c. [Pg.32]
