Self-consistent field method Hartree equations

The Hartree-Fock orbitals are expanded in an infinite series of known basis functions. For instance, in diatomic molecules, certain two-center functions of elliptic coordinates are employed. In practice, a limited number of appropriate atomic orbitals (AO) is adopted as the basis. Such an approach has been developed by Roothaan 10>. In this case the Hartree-Fock differential equations are replaced by a set of nonlinear simultaneous equations in which the limited number of AO coefficients in the linear combinations are unknown variables. The orbital energies and the AO coefficients are obtained by solving the Fock-Roothaan secular equations by an iterative method. This is the procedure of the Roothaan LCAO (linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals) SCF (self-consistent-field) method. 

In order to find a good approximate wave function, one uses the Hartree-Fock procedure. Indeed, the main reason the Schrodinger equation is not solvable analytically is the presence of interelectronic repulsion of the form e2/r. — r.. In the absence of this term, the equation for an atom with n electrons could be separated into n hydrogen-like equations. The Hartree-Fock method, also called the Self-Consistent-Field method, regards all electrons except one (called, for instance, electron 1), as forming a cloud of electric charge... 

This expression excludes self-interaction. There have been a number of attempts to include into the Hartree-Fock equations the main terms of relativistic and correlation effects, however without great success, because the appropriate equations become much more complex. For a large variety of atoms and ions both these effects are fairly small. Therefore, they can be easily accounted for as corrections in the framework of first-order perturbation theory. The equation is used to describe the behaviour of an atom or molecule in terms of its wave-like (or quantum) nature. By trying to solve the equation the energy levels of the system are calculated. However, the complex nature of multielectron/nuclei systems is simplified using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Unfortunately it is not possible to obtain an exact solution of the Schrddinger wave equation except for the simplest case, i.e. hydrogen. Theoretical chemists have therefore established approaches to find approximate solutions to the wave equation. One such approach uses the Hartree-Fock self-consistent field method, although other approaches are possible. Two important classes of calculation are based on ab initio or semi-empirical methods. Ah initio literally means from the beginning . The term is used in computational chemistry to describe computations which are not based upon any experimental data, but based purely on theoretical principles. This is not to say that this approach has no scientific basis - indeed the approach uses mathematical approximations to simplify, for example, a differential equation. In contrast, semi-empirical methods utilize some experimental data to simplify the calculations. As a consequence semi-empirical methods are more rapid than ab initio.

There are no analytical forms for the radial functions, / ni(r), as solutions of the radial wave equation. Hartree, in 1928, developed the standard solution procedure, the self-consistent field method for the helium atom by using the simple product forms of equation 1.10 to represent the two-electron wave function. Herman and Skillman (4) programmed a very useful approximate form of the Hartree method in the early 1960s for atomic structure calculations on all the atoms in the Periodic Table. An executable version of this program, based on their FORTRAN code, modified to output data for use on a spreadsheet is included with the material on the CDROM as hs.exe. 

THE HALL-ROOTHAAN EQUATIONS, THE ORBITAL APPROXIMATION AND THE MODERN HARTREE-FOCK SELF-CONSISTENT FIELD METHOD... 

The formal analysis of the mathematics required incorporating the linear combination of atomic orbitals molecular orbital approximation into the self-consistent field method was a major step in the development of modem Hartree-Fock-Slater theory. Independently, Hall (57) and Roothaan (58) worked out the appropriate equations in 1951. Then, Clement (8,9,63) applied the procedure to calculate the electronic structures of many of the atoms in the Periodic Table using linear combinations of Slater orbitals. Nowadays linear combinations of Gaussian functions are the standard approximations in modem LCAO-MO theory, but the Clement atomic calculations for helium are recognized to be very instructive examples to illustrate the fundamentals of this theory (67-69).

In the RISM-SCF theory, the statistical solvent distribution around the solute is determined by the electronic structure of the solute, whereas the electronic strucmre of the solute is influenced by the surrounding solvent distribution. Therefore, the ab initio MO calculation and the RISM equation must be solved in a self-consistent manner. It is noted that SCF (self-consistent field) applies not only to the electronic structure calculation but to the whole system, e.g., a self-consistent treatment of electronic structure and solvent distribution. The MO part of the method can be readily extended to the more sophisticated levels beyond Hartree-Fock (HF), such as configuration interaction (Cl) and coupled cluster (CC). 

The Hartree-Fock equations form a set of pseudo-eigenvalue equations, as the Fock operator depends on all the occupied MOs (via the Coulomb and Exchange operators, eqs. (3.36) and (3.33)). A specific Fock orbital can only be determined if all the other occupied orbitals are known, and iterative methods must therefore be employed for determining the orbitals. A set of functions which is a solution to eq. (3.41) are called Self-Consistent Field (SCF) orbitals. 

In most work reported so far, the solute is treated by the Hartree-Fock method (i.e., Ho is expressed as a Fock operator), in which each electron moves in the self-consistent field (SCF) of the others. The term SCRF, which should refer to the treatment of the reaction field, is used by some workers to refer to a combination of the SCRF nonlinear Schrodinger equation (34) and SCF method to solve it, but in the future, as correlated treatments of the solute becomes more common, it will be necessary to more clearly distinguish the SCRF and SCF approximations. The SCRF method, with or without the additional SCF approximation, was first proposed by Rinaldi and Rivail [87, 88], Yomosa [89, 90], and Tapia and Goscinski [91], A highly recommended review of the foundations of the field was given by Tapia [71],...

The set of molecular orbitals leading to the lowest energy are obtained by a process referred to as a self-consistent-field or SCF procedure. The archetypal SCF procedure is the Hartree-Fock procedure, but SCF methods also include density functional procedures. All SCF procedures lead to equations of the form. 

In spite of these gross approximations, the method proved to be extremely useful and was extensively used to correlate the chemical properties of conjugated systems. Several attempts were subsequently made to introduce the repulsions between the n electrons in the calculations. These include the work of Goeppert-Mayer and Sklar 4> on benzene and that of Wheland and Mann 5> and of Streitwieser 6> with the a> technique. But the first general methods of wide application were developed only in 1953 by Pariser and Parr 7> (interaction of configuration) and by Pople 8> (SCF) following the publication by Roothaan of his self-consistent field formalism for solving the Hartree-Fock equation for... 

The relativistic or non-relativistic random-phase approximation (RRPA or RPA)t is a generalized self-consistent field procedure which may be derived making the Dirac/Hartree-Fock equations time-dependent. Therefore, the approach is often called time-dependent Dirac/Hartree-Fock. The name random phase comes from the original application of this method to very large systems where it was argued that terms due to interactions between many alternative pairs of excited particles, so-called two-particle-two-hole interactions ((2p-2h) see below) tend to... 

Now, in the Hartree-Fock method (the Roothaan-Hall equations represent one implementation of the Hartree-Fock method) each electron moves in an average field due to all the other electrons (see the discussion in connection with Fig. 53, Section 5.23.2). As the c s are refined the MO wavefunctions improve and so this average field that each electron feels improves (since J and K, although not explicitly calculated (Section 5.2.3.63) improve with the i// s ). When the c s no longer change the field represented by this last set of c s is (practically) the same as that of the previous cycle, i.e. the two fields are consistent with one another, i.e. self-consistent . This Roothaan-Hall-Hartree-Fock iterative process (initial guess, first F, first-cycle c s, second F, second-cycle c s, third F, etc.) is therefore a self-consistent-field procedure or SCF procedure, like the Hartree-Fock procedure...
