The high hardness of chromium oxide resulting from its crystal structure is exploited in polishing agents for metals and in brake linings. Addition of a small amount of chromium oxide to magnetic materials of audio and video tapes imparts a self-cleaning effect to the sound heads. [Pg.98]

Strain-proofing and self-cleaning effects can be enhanced through the highly hydrophilic function. As an example, a plastic surface smeared with oil cannot be cleaned unless one uses detergent. A highly hydrophilic surface,... [Pg.431]

Conical Mixer Dryer The conical mixer dryer is a batch-wise operating unit commonly used in the pharmaceutical and specialty chemical industries for the drying of solvent or water wet, free-flowing powders. The process area is a vertically oriented conical vessel with an internally mounted screw. Figure 12-80 shows a schematic of the bottom drive conical mixer dryer. The dryer utilizes the heatable, internal rotating screw to provide agitation of the batch of material and thus improve the heat and mass transfer of the process. Because it rotates around the full circumference of the vessel, the screw provides a self-cleaning effect for the heated vessel walls. [Pg.1040]

Papain is a proteolytic enzyme. It exhibits a proteolytic activity towards various ester and amide finks, as they occur in proteins, or peptides. The performance has been tested with ultrafiltration experiments of casein solutions. The modified membranes show a self-cleaning effect. Whereas the nonenz5miatic membranes are completely blocked during ultrafiltration, the enzyme-functionalized membranes do not clog. [Pg.161]

Silicone coated glass fabric has good flame-retardant properties, releases little smoke, leaves no toxic combustion products and is more weather resistant than PVC. However, its self-cleaning effect is inferior to that of PTFE. Silicone is more flexible and protects the glass fabric better than PTFE and has very good translucency, because the refraction indices of fibreglass and silicone are similar. [Pg.39]

To provide architects with increased ability to plan the use of textiles in the future, cost analyses need to compare textile solutions with glass alternatives, taking into account the supporting structure and framing systems, the constant energy consumption of the pumps for ETFE cushions and the durability of the system as a whole, as well as cleaning issues to consider the self-cleaning effect of some textile materials. As the cost-related issues... [Pg.417]
