Moreover, nanostructured materials are useful for the construction of NE. For example, a carbon NE has been reported by sealing of a carbon nanotube under an insulator layer [27]. NE ensembles have been obtained through self-assembling of gold nanoparticles [28] and carbon nanotubes [29] at derivatized substrates. Another interesting approach is the direct growth of carbon nanotubes on electrodes with dispersed catalytic nickel nanoparticles. In this case, highly dispersed carbon NE ensembles can be constructed [30]. 

The Ji-stacking of SWCNTs with polyaromatics was used by Liu et al. [218] in the self-assembling of gold nanoparticles to soluble SWCNTs. 17-(1-Pyrenyl)-13-...

A guided self-assembly of gold nanoparticles succeeded also on patterned GaAs surfaces. Stmctured Be-doped GaAs surfaces were first decorated with a monolayer of xylyl dithiol molecules. A uniform monolayer of dodecanethiol stabilized 5 nm Au particles, generated by spreading a hexane solntion...

The next example of template-assisted self-assembly of metal nanoparticle is a little different from the previous ones. This is a microwires reported by Velev et al., assembled by dielectrophoresis from suspensions of metallic nanoparticles. In this case, they did not use any special template materials, but apply an electric field as a kind of template [89], The microwires form after introduction of a suspension of gold nanoparticles (diameter 15-30nm) into a thin chamber electrodes (the gap varies from 2 mm to more than 1 cm) in an electric field intensity of 250Vcm . The wires can grow faster than 50p,m per second to lengths exceeding 5 mm (Fig. 6.21a). Then finally, when the wire was completely assembled, there... 

This section has discussed a diverse range of self-assembled synthetic macromolecules such as block copolymers and elastm-like polymers for template-directed assembly of different types of inorganic nanoparticles into anisotropic ID nanostructures. In the next section, we introduce a simple and cost-effective approach for directing the assembly of gold nanoparticles into ID structures via self-assembly of a short commercially available surfactant.
