On the basis of its geometrical coordination requirements, 4,7-phenanthroline (phen) constitutes a ligand which can be considered as an extended pyrimidine ring. The cyclic self-assembled metallic systems based on phen and designated as metallacalixarenes have been obtained and their interactions with anions have been studied.

Having accomplished the synthesis (Figure 2.1.6), the next task was to prove the formation of the self-assembled metal coordination complexes. This was achieved by NMR and ESI-MS experiments and elemental analysis and in one instance we were even able to perform X-ray structure analysis (Figures 2.1.7-2.1.9). 

In this synthetic strategy, supramolecular interactions are used to construct the catalyst backbone. The approach can be used for a wide variety of catalysts, and mechanistic effects include catalytic supramolecular assemblies, self-assembly, metal-mediated catalysis and organocatalysis, and chiral induction.

Such strategy could be developed for self-assembled metal arrays in a variety of DNA structures such as multistranded, hairpin, junction, or cyclic structures. The next approach should be to increase the number of metal ions or to create heterometal arrays possibly leading to metal-metal communication triggered by stimuli from outside.
