The left picture shows aggregates of silicon oxide particles with a diameter of 0.9 pm (see example 1.1). At the bottom an atomic force microscope image of cylindrical CTAB micelles adsorbed to gold(lll) is shown (see example 12.3, width 200 nm). The right image was also obtained by atomic force microscopy. It shows the surface of a self-assembled monolayer of long-chain alkylthiols on gold(lll) (see fig. 10.2, width 3.2 nm). [Pg.368]

With regard to its electronic properties, no studies are available that clearly demonstrate that electron transfer through such a supramolecular assembly is possible. Solid-state electrochemical studies on the crystalline material are not available at the present time. The closest to supramolecular electrochemistry are studies of ordered two-dimensional peptide arrays on gold. For some Fc-peptide cystamines, self-assembled monolayers of Fc-peptide cystamines were prepared that allow the quantification of the electron transfer kinetics by electrochemical techniques. Similar to the supramolecular assemblies, H-bonding plays an important role. At the present time (2003), only a few systems were studied and offer a rather complex picture of the ET properties. Additional experimental work is required to obtain definite results on the influence of the peptide primary and secondary structure on ET kinetics. In addition, tile issue of lateral interactions needs to be addressed by detailed dilution studies with alkylthiols. [Pg.181]

Self-assembly of one- or two-component alkylthiol SAMs provides a convenient tool for tailoring, at a molecular level, the chemical reactivity of a gold surface by choosing and modulating the nature and amount of surface-bound chemically reactive groups (e.g., -OH, -COOH, or -NH2) in the monolayer. Particularly, mixed alkylthiol SAMs prepared by coadsorption of alkylthiols... [Pg.14]

Stabilization of a lipid membrane onto a solid support by covalent attachment also provides the physical stability necessary for the development of practical sensors. An oriented membrane can be prepared by allowing self-assembly of individual amphiphilic molecules onto a solid surface through either the reaction of terminal silane moieties with a hydroxylated surface to form a silyl ether [33,34], or by the reaction of sulfur-terminated compounds (alkylthiols or disulfides) with gold surfaces [35,36]. A variety of species, both with and without polar head groups, have been deposited onto surfaces such as glass, quartz, silicon, and gold [37-39]. These include phospholipids, fatty acids, and fatty amines which were synthetically altered so as to contain either a silyl chloride or a thiol moiety at the terminus of the acyl chain [40]. Both monolayers... [Pg.236]

Ordered thin layers can also been obtained from dilute solutions of discotic compounds onto gold or silicon surfaces. For example, triphenylene derivatives with a single long (o-alkylthiol chain have been shown to self-assemble into monolayers, in which the two types of orientation, face-on and... [Pg.48]
