One drawback of traditional injection molding was its inability to produce parts with complex internal passages. To be sure, simple holes could be incorporated by using core pins that are retracted mechanically either parallel or perpendicular to the mold-opening direction. To permit retraction, however, these pins (and the resulting holes) had to be straight and if not of constant cross section, tapered appropriately with regard to the direction of retraction. [Pg.342]

We consider a co-extrusion die consisting of an outer circular distribution channel of rectangular cross-section, connected to an extrusion slot, which is a slowly tapering narrow passage between two flat, non-parallel plates. The polymer melt is fed through an inlet into the distribution channel and flows into... [Pg.173]

In conclusion, it should further be noted that, as will be explained in Section 3.8, the quantity d 4 of the basic equation (3.51) is equal to the area of the core walls only if the capillary is of constant cross-section. If it tapers either outwards or inwards, a correction to d/i is required. [Pg.149]

Transverse Dimensions or Fineness. Historically, the quantity used to describe the fineness or coarseness of a fiber was the diameter. Eor fibers that have irregular cross-sections or that taper along their lengths, the term diameter has no useful meaning. Eor cylindrical fibers, however, diameter is an accurate measurement of the transverse dimension. Though textile fibers can be purchased in a variety of cross-sectional shapes, diameter is stiU a useful descriptor of the transverse dimension. Eiber diameter is important in determining not only the ease with which fibers can be twisted in converting them to yams, but also fiber stiffness, ie, fabric stiffness, and, alternatively, fabric softness and drapeabiHty. [Pg.453]

Figure 5 shows an ideally tapered enricher that has been replaced by three square cascade sections, a process called squaring-off the cascade (3—6). During the squaring-off process, two essential requirements must be kept in mind The interstage flow in all-square sections must always exceed the local value of E at all points in the cascade, and the squared-off cascade must contain a total number of stages which exceeds N. In order for the... [Pg.82]

Spiral-roller units are usually equipped with tapered rollers to compensate for the difference in distance traveled by the inner and outer edges of the container. Tapered rollers are also used on curved sections of ordinary roller-conveyor lines. [Pg.1977]

The rotor is squirrel cage with short-circuited copper rings at the ends. Here also, to vary the starting characteristics of the motor, the skin effect is used by providing deep bars, flat bars, tapered bars or other types of slots (discussed in Section 2.3). [Pg.171]

Slides Bearings brake linings grinding and metal-cutting operations taper sections of metal surfaces. [Pg.295]

The plenum chamber design may be a simple box shape, formed by flat sides and bottom, or curved transition sections may be used to obtain a tapered smooth transition from the rectangular bundle to the circular fan. Either design may be used for forced-draft or induced-draft air cooled heat exchangers. [Pg.19]

Most processing methods involve flow in capillary or rectangular sections, which may be uniform or tapered. Therefore the approach taken here will be to develop first the theory for Newtonian flow in these channels and then when the Non-Newtonian case is considered it may be seen that the steps in the analysis are identical although the mathematics is a little more complex. At the end of the chapter a selection of processing situations are analysed quantitatively to illustrate the use of the theory. It must be stressed however, that even the more complex analysis introduced in this chapter will not give precisely accurate... [Pg.343]

In many practical situations involving the flow of polymer melts through dies and along channels, the cross-sections are tapered. In these circumstances, tensile stresses will be set up in the fluid and their effects superimposed on the effects due to shear stresses as analysed above. Cogswell has analysed this problem for the flow of a power law fluid along coni-cylindrical and wedge channels. The flow in these sections is influenced by three factors ... [Pg.357]

Section B This section is tapered so there will be pressure losses due to both shear and extensional flows. [Pg.380]

Section C Although this section is tapered on one side only, since the angle is small the error in assuming it is tapered on both sides will be negligible. The included angle is taken as 8°. [Pg.381]

Solution Since the flnal section of the die lips is not tapered it may be assumed that the swelling at the die exit is due to shear effects only. [Pg.382]

A 125-ml standard taper Erlenmeyer flask is equipped for magnetic stirring and charged with 50 g (0.37 mole) of tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (Chapter 5, Section I). A standard taper inner joint or a short condenser is greased and inserted into the flask... [Pg.126]
