Face lubricated-type seals must be connected from the source of lubrication to the tap openings in the seal gland before startup. This is another predetermined environmental control feature that is mandatory for proper seal function. Where double seals are to be operated, it is necessary that the lubrication feed lines be connected to the proper ports for both circulatory or dead-end systems before equipment startup. This is very important because all types of double seals depend on the controlled pressure and flow of the sealing fluid to function properly. Even before the shaft is rotated, the sealing liquid pressure must exceed the product pressure opposing the seal. Be sure a vapor trap does not prevent the lubricant from reaching the seal face promptly. [Pg.953]

Seal glands shall be provided with bolt holes rather than slots, except where the ease of dismantling pumps with axially split casings makes slotted construction desirable. [Pg.30]

Provisions shall be made for centering the seal gland and/or chamber with either an inside or outside diameter register fit. The register fit surface shall be concentric to the shaft and shall have a total indicated runout of not more... [Pg.30]

A shoulder at least 3 mm (0.12 in.) thick shall be provided in the seal gland to prevent the stationary element of the mechanical seal from dislodging as a result of chamber pressure. [Pg.30]

Specified seal and pump connections shall be identified by symbols permanently marked into the component (such as stamped, cast, or chemically etched) and shown on the seal drawing. The symbols shown in Appendix D shall be used. The sirffix letters shall be used in conjunction with these markings where appropriate. When a steam quench is specified by the purchaser, the inlet connection (Ql) shall be located in the top quadrant of the seal gland, and the outlet connection (QO) shall be located to prevent the formation of liquid pockets. [Pg.30]

The purchaser will specify whether flanges are reqnired in place of socket-welded unions. Threaded connections are permitted at mechanical seal glands. [Pg.49]

All pressure easing eomponents (ineluding seal glands and seal chambers) as defined in 1.4.40 shall be hydrostatically tested with liquid at a minimum of 1.5 times the maximum allowable working pressure, with the special provisions specified below ... [Pg.52]

Seal glands and seal chambers shall have provision for only those connections required by the seal flush plan. If additional tapped connection points are specified and are not used, they shall be plugged in accordance with 5.4.3.7. [Pg.50]

The mating Joint between the seal gland and the seal chamber face shall incorporate a confined gasket to prevent blowout. The gasket shall be of the controlled compression type, for example, an O-ring ora spiral wound... [Pg.50]

As the unit will work under vacuum and a slight pressure, the sealing gland must be able to take both vacuum and pressure. As polyurethane is a very effective adhesive, the seals must be readily replaceable. If a mechanical seal is used, great care must be taken to prevent any product from coming onto a contact surface. [Pg.56]
