Screws features

The extruders were of a similar size, but the one used for the HDPE/filler trials was longer to accommodate a vent zone and had an alternative conventional screw. The PBT/pigment trials used a screw with a mixing element following the barrier section. As the two investigations used screws of similar diameters and together covered a range of screw features, the essential details are compared in Table 13.1. [Pg.236]

The distinguishing feature of this dryer is the bottom-screw drive, as opposed to a top-drive unit, thus ehminating any mechanical drive components inside the vessel. The bottom-driven screw rotates about its own axis (speeds up to 100 rpm) and around the interior of the vessel (speeds up to 0.4 rpm). The screw is cantilevered in the vessel and requires no additional support (even in vessel sizes up to 20 m operating volume). The dryer is available in a variety of materials of construction, including SS 304 and 316, as well as Hastelloy. [Pg.1217]

The particular features of the nylons should also be taken into account in extrusion. Dry granules must be used unless a devolatilising extruder is employed. Because of the sharp melting point it is found appropriate to use a screw with a very short compression zone. Polymers of the lowest melt viscosity are to be avoided since they are difficult to handle. Provision should be made to initiate cooling immediately the extrudate leaves the die. [Pg.501]

Another feature of an extruder is the presence of a gauze filter after the screw and before the die. This effectively filters out any inhomogeneous material which might otherwise clog the die. These screen packs as they are called, will normally filter the melt to 120-150 fim. However, there is conclusive evidence to show that even smaller particles than this can initiate cracks in plastics extrudates e.g. polyethylene pressure pipes. In such cases it has been found that fine melt filtration ( 45 p.m) can significantly improve the performance of the extrudate. [Pg.250]

There are a number of important features in reciprocating screw injection moulding machines and these will now be considered in turn. [Pg.282]

Elame propagation can also be stopped between process eqnipment handling bnlk solids and powders by jndicions selection and design of bnlk solids/powders conveying eqnipment snch as rotary valves (rotary airlocks) and screw conveyors. The mass of bnlk solids/powders contained in these items of eqnipment provide a tortnons path throngh which the gas and flame have to pass, and so can act as a material choke when certain design features are implemented. [Pg.44]

There are many design features and styles of safety relief valves, such as flanged ends, screwed ends, valves fitted internally for corrosive service, high temperature service, cryogenic service/low temperatures, with bonnet or without, nozzle entrance or orifice entrance, and resistance to discharge piping strains on body. Yet most of these variations have little, if anything to do with the actual performance to relieve overpressure in a system/vessel. [Pg.400]

There are several techniques available for SFA to drive a sample along the normal direction and to position it to a specified site. A common feature of these techniques is to employ a multi-stage driving system of increasing sensitivity. The apparatus developed by Israelachivili s team, for example, uses a two-stage screw as the coarse and medium control, which gives positioning accuracy of 1 /rm and 1 nm. [Pg.16]

This knowledge and understanding may be helpful to characterize local conformations of other optically active polysilanes in solution. For example, poly(methyl-(-)-(3-pinanylsilane) [(+)-7 Mw = 10,200] prepared by Shinohara and co-workers.281 showed a bisignate CD band at 280 and 303 nm, associated with a broad UV absorption at 300 nm in chloroform at 15°C. Since the spectroscopic features are quite similar to those of i,28d-28e it is possible that the main chain in 7 may contain diastereomeric helical motifs with opposite screw senses and different screw pitches. [Pg.224]
