Screw feeders are also used to assist in bin unloading and in producing uniform feed. Of importance here is the need for a variable-pitch screw to produce a uniform draw of material across the entire hopper opening (Fig. 21-27). For uniform flow to occur, the screw-feeder opening-to-diameter ratio should not exceed 6. [Pg.1939]

Various types of screws are used for modern conveyors. These include short-pitch, variable-pitch, cut flights, ribbon, and paddle screws. The Procedure given above also applies to these screws. [Pg.251]

Fig. 6.4-38 sho vs the functional components. At the inlet on top of the equipment, the slightly pre-mixed feed components enter first a mixing and predensification screw. Pressure builds-up by the changes in shaft diameter, sometimes variable pitch of the screw flights, and by a collar at the end of the screw shaft or a pressure piece , both forming an annular space with reduced area through which the material must pass. Such a screw conveyor, mixer, and processor is often called expander. [Pg.627]

Screw flights increase from 2/3 to full diameter. Used as feeder screws for uniform withdrawal of lumpy materials. Generally equivalent to and more economical than variable pitch flight. [Pg.1030]

Conventional feeder screws have full-face flights welded to a centre shaft or tube. Uniform pitch screws are sometimes used in simple feeding applications. In order to secure differential intake of product along the axis of a screw, a range of techniques can be adopted, either individually or in combination where appropriate. Typical constructional features are (see Fig. 4.5) stepped pitch variable pitch stepped or taper centre tube or shaft variable screw diameter part ribbon or shaftless construction. (Occasionally the construction is stepped on the outside diameter.)... [Pg.70]

Although normally specified to deal with wet, sticky, and cohesive products, ribbon screws (as shown in Figs 5.18 a and b) can be effectively used, in whole or in part, in feeder construction. A small gain in capacity is given by this change of design, so a final section of ribbons on a variable pitch feed screw, enhances the extraction rate to make the flow channel more effective. Screws without a centre shaft are made for relatively crude... [Pg.108]

In the press process, the seed from which oil is to be removed is cracked and crushed to produce flakes about 0.25 mm thick, which are cooked at temperatures up to 104 °C for 15-20 minutes. The temperature is then raised to about 110-115 °C until the moisture content is reduced to about 30 g/kg. The material is then passed through a perforated horizontal cylinder in which revolves a screw of variable pitch that gives pressures up to 40 MN/m. The residue from screw pressing usually has an oil content of 25-40 g/kg. The cylindrical presses used for extraction are called expellers and the method of extraction is usually referred to as the expeller process. [Pg.564]

Variable-pitch screws having the short pitch at the feed end automatically control the flow to the conveyor and correcdy proportion the load down the screw s length. Screws having what is referred to as a short section, which has either a shorter pitch or smaller diameter, are self-loading and do... [Pg.209]

One of the major limiting factors of screw conveyors is their ability to provide a continuous supply of incoming product. While some conveyor designs, such as those having a variable-pitch screw, provide the ability to self-feed, their installation should include a means of ensuring a constant, consistent incoming supply of product. [Pg.213]
