Statistical screening techniques

Franz et al. [42] reviewed these techniques completely, along with statistical screening techniques and other experimental methods, with an excellent list of publications. A few selected publications from the recent literature demonstrate the wide variety of formulation and processing problems to which these techniques can be applied and the varying methods selected for optimization. 

The ruggedization of the analytical procedure was performed by applying statistical screening techniques to minimize the effort required and, therefore, reduce the time and the cost substantially. The statistical approaches used in this study were those first introduced by Plackett-Burman (3.) and Youden-Steiner (4). Both techniques reduce the required effort since they use balanced incomplete block design experiments which can clearly indicate the non-affecting parameters from those that may have an effect. In this study the important variables of the analytical method were identified by using the Plackett-Burman technique. 

Some of the statistical methods used in analyzing data from rapeseed studies have been reviewed in this chapter the problems in their application and interpretation have been discussed. It is impossible in so little space to do justice to all methods or even to consider any method in depth. Furthermore, little has been said of one of the essential components of any sound statistical analysis, the initial screening and plotting of one s data, not because these procedures are unimportant but rather because they are seldom discussed in scientific publications. It is hoped, however, that the reader will have a better appreciation of the wide range of methodology available and of the care required in the application of the techniques. In this article we have introduced the Bruker SGF Profiling method for the authentication, verification and quality control of fiuit juices. In addition to tihe quantification of a large array of characteristic compounds, this fully automated NMR screening technique uses statistical models for the estimation of fhiit content or the origin of the juice. This analysis tool can show known and unknown deviations from normality. Currently, routines are under development to identify unknown deviations by constructing spectral patterns which can be compared to an existing reference compound database. ... 

In the first step, a screening process will be applied to separate the major potential hazards these will be addressed in more detail. QRA techniques are used to evaluate the extent of the risk arising from hazards with the potential to cause major accidents, based on the prediction of the likelihood and magnitude of the event. This assessment will be based on engineering judgement and statistics of previous performance. Where necessary, risk reduction measures will be applied until the level of risk is acceptable. This of course is an emotive subject, since it implies placing a value on human life.
