Clearly more empirical studies are needed linking patient safety culture scores to patient safety and quality outcome data Such studies should examine linkages at the hospital level and at the unit level where relationships may be stronger. The difficulty of this research is that large numbers of hospitals with both safety culture and outcome data are needed to detect these relationships. 

The results of the study were not encouraging. While there was some level of progress in some areas in all nations, the overall trend in environmental quality from 1970 to 1995 was in a negative direction. Denmark and the Netherlands earned the best scores, showing declines in environmental quality of 10.6 percent and 11.4 percent, respectively. The two nations with the most disappointing results were Canada and France, with a decrease in environmental quality of 38.1 percent and 41.2 percent, respectively. The United States occupied a middle point in the range, with a decrease in environmental quality of 22.1 percent. 

The system then adjusts these scores to account for the way different compounds react in the different media — air, ground water, and surface water. On the basis primarily of a compound s half-life in a medium and on dispersion patterns, we assign each compound a separate inherent risk score for each medium. The scale we use is very coarse each level is 10 times greater than the previous level. The data now in the model is, therefore, insensitive to risks that are only two or thre times as great as others. We found it convenient to express the ten-fold differences on a logarithmic unit scale. 

In a dietary study of 11 men in a metabolic unit, selenium intake (80 pg/day for the first 21 days, then either 13 (n=6) or 356 (n=5) pg/day for 14 weeks) was reported to have no significant effect on mood, as measured using the Bi-Polar form of the profile of mood states (POMS) (Hawkes and Hornbostel 1996). However, subjects with initially low selenium levels did show significantly greater decreases in mood scores during selenium depletion.

Patients with classic PKU nsnally appear normal at birth. The nenrologic seqnelae may result in part from the competitive interaction of phenylalanine with brain amino acid transport systems and inhibition of neurotransmitter synthesis. These biochemical alterations lead to impaired myelin synthesis and delayed nenronal development, which result in the clinical picture in patients such as Piquet Yuria. Because of the simplicity of the test for PKU (elevated phenylalanine levels in the blood), all newborns in the United States are required to have a PKU test at birth. Early detection of the disease can lead to early treatment, and the nenrologic conseqnences of the disease can be bypassed.
