Schiff base chemistry

The application of Schiff base chemistry to the synthesis of heterophanes possessing diverse subunits has been reviewed in part (82MI52202, B-79MI52201). An example of this procedure is the treatment of (19) with 2,3-diaminopyridine, with or without metal ion templation, to give (20) as an isomeric mixture (75MI52200). 

An alternate route to porphocyanines predicated on the use of Schiff base chemistry has also been reported. Using this latter, simplified approach, porphocyanine 9.110 could be prepared directly from diformyl dipyrrylmethane 9.120 by treating with ammonia-saturated ethanol followed by oxidation with oxygen (Scheme 9.2.5). In a similar way, the ieiraA w(ethoxycarbonyl)-derived porphocyanine 9.122 was also prepared. As might be expected, this highly functionalized system could not be obtained using the initial synthetic pathway. 

The most common approach to obtain dihydroazines usually involves Schiff-base chemistry. For example, <4 + 2) combinations have found wide application in the preparation of 4,5- (8f) and 1,4- (8b) dihydropyridazines by condensation of 1,4-diones with hydrazine (Scheme 1). 

Novikov and coworkers described an intramolecular variant of their difluorocar-bene/Schiff base chemistry discussed above. Iminodifluoromethanides derived from the reaction of difluorocarbene with Schiff bases react with tethered acetylenes to produce fluorinated chromeno[4,3-Z ]pyrroles, for example, 78 (Fig. 3.38). ... 

Rigid microporous hypercrosslinked networks were also derived through SchifF base chemistry by condensation of trifimctional melamine with aromatic di- and trialdehydes [271].
