Metal Cleaning. About 204 thousand metric tons of HCl (100% basis) was consumed in 1993 for steel pickling, wherein the hydrochloric acid readily dissolves all of the various oxides present in the scale formed during the hot rolling process. Using suitable inhibitors such as alkyl pyridines, HCl reacts very slowly with the base metal rendering the surface so clean that it must be passivated with a mild alkaline rinse. [Pg.451]

While the ambient-temperature operation of membrane processes reduces scaling, membranes are much more susceptible not only to minute amounts of scaling or even dirt, but also to the presence of certain salts and other compounds that reduce their ability to separate salt from water. To reduce corrosion, scaling, and other problems, the water to be desalted is pretreated. The pretreatment consists of filtration, and may include removal of air (deaeration), removal of CO2 (decarbonation), and selective removal of scale-forming salts (softening). It also includes the addition of chemicals that allow operation without scale deposition, or which retard scale deposition or cause the precipitation of scale which does not adhere to soHd surfaces, and that prevent foam formation during the desalination process. [Pg.242]

Before steel strip or rod can be cold rolled, tinned, galvanised, or enamelled, etc. any scale formed on it by previous heat treatment must be removed. This can be done by mechanical and other special methods, but if a perfectly clean surface is to be produced, acid pickling is preferred, either alone or in conjunction with other pretreatment processes. [Pg.292]

Oxidation is the first step for producing molecules with a very wide range of functional groups because oxygenated compounds are precursors to many other products. For example, alcohols may be converted to ethers, esters, alkenes, and, via nucleophilic substitution, to halogenated or amine products. Ketones and aldehydes may be used in condensation reactions to form new C-C double bonds, epoxides may be ring opened to form diols and polymers, and, finally, carboxylic acids are routinely converted to esters, amides, acid chlorides and acid anhydrides. Oxidation reactions are some of the largest scale industrial processes in synthetic chemistry, and the production of alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, epoxides and carboxylic acids is performed on a mammoth scale. For example, world production of ethylene oxide is estimated at 58 million tonnes, 2 million tonnes of adipic acid are made, mainly as a precursor in the synthesis of nylons, and 8 million tonnes of terephthalic acid are produced each year, mainly for the production of polyethylene terephthalate) [1]. [Pg.181]

Since cross-linked polymers caruiot be re-formed or re-shaped it is necessary to synthesize them in the final physical form appropriate for each particular application. Particles in the size range 50-1000 pm are suitable for laboratory scale chemistry, while larger particles have advantages in large scale continuous processes. Irregularly shaped particles are susceptible to mechanical attrition and breakdown to fines , whereas the process of suspension polymerization [13] yields uniform spherical cross-linked polymer particles often referred to as beads, pearls or resins. These are much more mechanically robust and are widely exploited on both a small and large scale e. g. as the basis of ion exchange resins [14]. [Pg.2]
