Sarcoptes mites

In dogs and cats, selamectin is rapidly absorbed from the skin into the bloodstream, where it kills heart-worm microfilaria. Selamectin is excreted into the intestinal tract where it kills intestinal parasites. Finally, selamectin is selectively distributed from the bloodstream into the sebaceous glands of the skin, forming reservoirs that provide persistent efficacy against fleas, ear mites, and sarcoptic mites. Active concentrations of selamectin are found in the plasma for at least 30 days. It is excreted mostly in the feces and a small unmetabolized amount in the urine. [Pg.2357]

Lindane is the active y-isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane. It also exerts a neurotoxic action on insects (as well as humans). Irritation of skin or mucous membranes may occur after topical use. Lindane is active also against intrader-mal mites (Sarcoptes scabiei, causative agent of scabies), besides lice and fleas. It is more readily degraded than DDT. [Pg.292]

Scabies. A contagious dermatitis of humans and various animals, caused by the itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, and characterized by a popular eruption over tiny, raised sinuous burrows produced by digging into the upper layer of the epidermis by the egg-laying female mite, which is accompanied by intense pruritus and sometimes associated with eczema and secondary bacterial infection. [Pg.575]

Scabies is a pruritic skin condition caused by an invasion of the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. [Pg.113]

Scabies is caused by the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which affects both humans and animals. Mange in domestic animals is caused by the same organism. Infection usually affects the interdigital and popliteal folds, axillary folds, the nmbihcus, and the scrotum. ." )... [Pg.2076]

Preliminary studies indicated that ivermectin has the potential to be the drug of choice for ectoparasitic infestations (mites, lice) of humans as well. Recently, there is growing evidence that scabies can also be treated by oral administration of ivermectin. Treatment of scabies is very difficult, and relapse is frequent after topical scabicidal therapy. Ivermectin has been proven to be a safe and effective alternative for the therapy of severe Sarcoptes scabiei infestation unresponsive to conventional treatment. [Pg.404]

Scabies Highly contagious skin disease caused by the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei Known also as Sarcoptic mange. [Pg.1178]

The scabies mite, Sarcoptes scabiei van hominis, is becoming increasingly resistant to existing acaricidal compounds such as lindane, benzyl benzoate, permethrin, and oral ivermectin. The potential use of a 5% M. alternifolia essential oil solution to treat scabies infections was investigated in vitro. It was found to be highly effective at reducing mite survival times, and the main active component was terpinen-4-ol. However, the in vivo effectiveness was only tested on one individual, in combination with benzyl benzoate and ivermectin (Walton et al., 2004). [Pg.398]
