Sarcoptes scabiei

Lindane is the active y-isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane. It also exerts a neurotoxic action on insects (as well as humans). Irritation of skin or mucous membranes may occur after topical use. Lindane is active also against intrader-mal mites (Sarcoptes scabiei, causative agent of scabies), besides lice and fleas. It is more readily degraded than DDT. 

Scabies. A contagious dermatitis of humans and various animals, caused by the itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, and characterized by a popular eruption over tiny, raised sinuous burrows produced by digging into the upper layer of the epidermis by the egg-laying female mite, which is accompanied by intense pruritus and sometimes associated with eczema and secondary bacterial infection. 

It is neurotoxic to Pediculus humanus, Pthirus pubis and Sarcoptes scabiei. 

Permethrin is toxic to Pediculus humanus, Pthirus pubis, and Sarcoptes scabiei. Less than 2% of an applied dose is absorbed percutaneously. Residual drug persists up to 10 days following application.

Crotamiton is a scabicide/pediculicide preparation that causes eradication of scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei) and symptomatic treatment of pruritic skin. 

Lindane exerts its action by being directly absorbed into the parasite and ova. Lotion nsed in treatment of Sarcoptes scabiei (scabies) in patients who have failed to respond to adeqnate doses or are intolerant of other approved therapies. Shampoo used in treatment of Pediculus capitis (head lice) and Pediculus pubis (crab hce) and their ova in patients who have failed to respond to adequate doses or are intolerant of other approved therapies. 

Preliminary studies indicated that ivermectin has the potential to be the drug of choice for ectoparasitic infestations (mites, lice) of humans as well. Recently, there is growing evidence that scabies can also be treated by oral administration of ivermectin. Treatment of scabies is very difficult, and relapse is frequent after topical scabicidal therapy. Ivermectin has been proven to be a safe and effective alternative for the therapy of severe Sarcoptes scabiei infestation unresponsive to conventional treatment.

Two parasitic organisms that cause common topicai infections are Sarcoptes scabiei, which is responsibie for scabies, and Pediculus humanus, which is responsible for lice infections.
