Walter Kohn (b. 1923) received a Ph D. in physics from Harvard University in 1948. In the early to mid-1960s, Kohn played the lead role in developing density-functional theory, which has become the predominant method for determining the electronic structures and total energies of molecules and solids. For this work he was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Kohn also made seminal contributions to superconductivity, semiconductor physics, and surface physics. Kohn started his career as an instructor at Harvard and then moved to Carnegie Mellon (1950-1960), the University of Califomia-San Diego (1960-1979), and finally, the University of Califomia-Santa Barbara (1979), where he became emeritus in 1991. At UCSB, Kohn was the founding director of the world-renowned Institute for Theoretical Physics. Kohn was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 1969, and he is a member of the Royal Society of London and the Bavarian Society.

Examining the literature which discusses the statistics of Jewish losses during World War II, one soon finds that there are only two detailed works on this topic the revisionist publication The Dissolution of the Eastern European Jewry by Walter N. Sanning (1983)80 and the 1991 compilation edited by Wolfgang Benz, Dimension des Volkermords,81 Whereas Sanning s work places the number of unexplained losses of European Jews at about 300,000, Benz s findings agree with the beliefs of the status quo and cite a loss of approximately six million. The contradiction between the two works is clearly apparent and undeniable, and hence a comparison is imperative.

At present, several dozen manuscripts from museums and centers such as the Walters Art Gallery the Freer Gallery of Art the Pierpont Morgan Library the Special Collections of the University of California at Los Angeles the Spencer Collection of the New York City Public Library the Armenian Patriarchate of St. James, Jerusalem and the Monastery of San Lazzaro, Venice, have been sampled and analyzed. Some of the data and results have been published in representative journals.
