Ideas and strategies concerning critical elements of the process—sample collection, manipulation, and transport—are discussed later. The requirement for reliability under field conditions dictates that a reasonably simple system be adopted. The sampler represents the major piece of custom-constructed equipment. Although remote-controlled pumps, valves, and motors can be purchased, the collector is still a major design challenge. 

On-Site Requirements. In collecting the samples, a well-planned strategy must provide for supplies and equipment as well as storage, handling, and shipping of the samples.
