Sampling and sample pretreatment

In this presentation prineiples and applieations of liquid membrane extraetion teehniques for sampling and sample pretreatment in environmental analytieal ehemistry will be deseribed.

The examples given in the chapters start from sampling and sample pretreatments, and include data interpretation. Conclusions are then drawn which bring together chemical and archaeological data.

Since the quality of the analytical result depends on the quality of every step of the analytical procedure, it is obvious that the establishment of a valid (useful) mathematical model is as important as performing adequately other steps of the analytical procedure such as sampling and sample pretreatment. 

Sampling. Monthly samplings were performed at the deepest point of the water column (depth = 31 m) over a period of 2 years. Because a number of labile reduced species occur in anoxic water samples, special attention has to be given to the sampling and sample pretreatment methods to obtain reliable results. Several approaches have been used to circumvent sampling and storage problems. Rapid field analysis of labile species has been recommended (e.g., ref. 9). This rapid analysis is particularly important in measuring the very labile species of Fe(II) and S(-II). 

The first round of key comparisons in these fields was largely completed by the end of 1999 and showed that gas analysis, elemental analysis and pH measurement are already rather well developed and mature areas, whereas organic analysis, for example in the clinical and food areas, requires more attention, in particular with respect to sampling and sample pretreatment which are often the major sources of uncertainty. As regards sampling which is even more important when field measurements are linked up with national or international standards, comprehensive practical and theoretical knowledge is available, especially for particulate material sampling [7], which can be used where applicable to improve the comparability of chemical measurement results.

Writing a book is always an audacious act, but writing a book such as this one on sampling and sample pretreatment is even more than that it is a real challenge. The book encompasses the entire field of analytical chemistry and oozes a profound knowledge of the concepts involved. 

Scientific journals are rarely considered to be appropriate forums for discussing the guiding principles behind sampling and sample pretreatment. A book like this, which brings together all relevant wisdom and knowledge on this particular field, is therefore a more than welcome addition to the analytical chemist s library.

Owing to the difficulty of preparing candidate reference materials of estuarine water and the analytical difficulties encountered by the laboratories for trace element determinations, it was decided to carry out preliminary investigations to optimise the sampling and sample pretreatment procedures, and to evaluate the state of the art of estuarine water analysis in Europe. A limited batch of estuarine water sample was therefore collected for this purpose.

A number of recommended methods for PAH analysis are described in the lARC/WHO manual (37), occasionally including specifications for sampling and sample pretreatments (see Table 1). These comprise TLC methods for water and food analysis and... 

The normative part of an analytical standard method in ISO includes at least the following clauses scope, normative references, interferences, principle, essential minimum requirements, reagents, apparatus, quality requirements for the separator column, sampling and sample pretreatment, procedure, calculation, expression of results, and test report. 

The scheme of the complete analytical procedure for natural waters, adapted to the utilization of voltammetry in the determination stage, is shown in Figure 4. High performance determination methods such as voltammetry in the differential pulse mode, can only display their full potentialities, if they are combined with adequate sampling and sample pretreatment procedures, adapted to minimize or exclude the contamination risks lurking everywhere, particularly in the ultra trace ranges encountered with levels usually between 0,5 and 10 ng/1 in the oceans[27,28] or in snow and ice from polar regions[25]. 

Classical methods of sampling and sample pretreatment are not well adapted to microsystems. The advantages of miniature dimensions are lost if e.g. a blood sample must be taken by a traditional syringe or if manual extraction or filtration operations must precede the final measuring process. On the other hand, such peripheral operations must be done also with miniature systems. Obviously, such preceding or subsequent operations attracated increased interest with the advent of analytical microsystems. Some examples of successful integration of sample preparation are discussed below.
