Sample collection strategies water samples

Our sample collection strategy using both SCUBA and CCUBA targets two types of locations unexplored depth zones and stressful environments. Water temperatures are known to affect faunal communities of a region significantly, primarily due to the narrow metabolic tolerance of most marine species. We take advantage of this diversity to gather samples from... [Pg.237]

The overall method includes sample collection and storage, extraction, and analysis steps. Sampling strategy is an important step in the overall process. Care must be taken to assure that the samples collected are representative of the environmental medium and that they are collected without contamination. There is an extensive list of test methods for water analysis (Tables 8.2, 8.3, and 8.4), which includes numerous modifications of the original methods, but most involve alternative extraction methods developed to improve overall method performance for the analysis. Solvent extraction methods with hexane are also in use. [Pg.217]

A) determination of the occurrence and distribution of chemicals in Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana (particularly in the southern portion of the Lake near New Orleans) that resulted from anthropogenic activity and (B) an overall water quality assessment of the Lake to ascertain any phenomena, in particular urban runoff related water pollution, that may be adversely affecting the ecological balance of the Lake. The strategies developed to address these objectives included (1) Collection of biota and sediment samples and their analyses for a broad spectrum of chemical substances which included, but were not limited to, those designated as priority pollutants by the U.S. [Pg.247]

In urban areas, sampling strategies for storm water runoff from industries and municipalities are of specific importance. The United States Federal Storm Water Regulations of 1990 specify protocols for such storm water nmoff sampling. These regulations define two separate samples that must be collected when a storm occurs. A first-flush sample is to be collected during the first 30 min of the storm event. A flow-weighted composite sample must be collected for the entire storm event or at least the first 3 h of the event [8]. [Pg.18]
