Salicylic acid (1) is not employed internally as an analgesic due to its local irritating effect on the gastrointestinal tract. It is employed externally on the skin, where it exerts a slight antiseptic action and a marked keratolytic action. The latter property makes salicylic acid a beneficial agent in the local treatment of warts, corns, fungous infections, and certain forms of eczematoid dermatitis. Tissues cells swell, softer, and ultimately desquamate. Salicylic acid is applied as a 2 to 20% concentration in collodion, lotions, or ointments, and as a 10 to 40% concentration in plasters. Salicylic acid plaster is used for the destructive effect of salicylic acid on hardened, keratinized tissue. The so-called corn plaster are typical. [Pg.446]

Salicylic acid (3) has kertolytic properties and is applied topically in the treatment of hyperkeratic and scaling skin conditions such as dandruff, ichthyosis, and psoriasis. Initially a concentration of about 2% is used, increased to about 5% if necessary. It is often used in conjunction with many other agents, such as benzoic acid, coal tar, resorcinol, and sulpher. Salicylic acid is also used in the form of a paint in a collodion basis (10 to 14%) or as a plaster (20 to 250%) to destroy warts or corns. It also possesses fungicidal properties and is used topically in the treatment of such fungal skin infections as tinea. [Pg.446]

Paints and liquids contain 11-17% salicylic acid, often in a collodion-based vehicle. Collodions contain pyroxylin, a nitrocellulose derivative, dissolved in a volatile solvent such as ether, acetone or alcohol. On application, the solvent evaporates, leaving on the skin an adherent, flexible, water-repellent film containing the medicament. This has the advantage of maintaining the salicylic acid at the site of application and also assists skin maceration by preventing moisture evaporation. Liquid preparations are usually applied daily for several days until the corn or callus can be easily removed. [Pg.55]

Some products containing salicylic acid, including ointments and collodion-based preparations, are the same as those marketed for corns and calluses. [Pg.62]

A collodion is used when a prolonged contact of the active substance with the skin is required, for example salicylic acid in the treatment of warts (see Table 12.42). [Pg.260]

Collodion can be considered as a oleogel of cellulose nitrate in a mixture of ether and alcohol to which castor oil is added. Collodion dries in on the skin to a kind of lipo-xerogel that sticks like a capping membrane. Collodion is therefore used to apply salicylic acid on warts. [Pg.489]

Collodion of Salicylic Acid, B.P.C, Contains 12 per cent of salicylic acid dissolved in flexible collodion. The salicylic acid can be determined by direct titration 2 ml is washed out from a pipette with a mixture of three parts of ether and one part of ethanol, previously neutralised to phenol red, and titrated directly with O-IN sodium hydroxide to this indicator. 1 ml = 0 01381 g. [Pg.559]
