Safety of patients

The devices must be designed and manufactured in such a way that when used as intended they do not compromise the safety of patients or users. Any risks that may be associated with their use must be acceptabie when weighed against the benefits to the patient and be compatible with a high level of protection of health and safety. 

The general attitude of physicians is to undertake actions which can be easily tolerated by the patient and which introduce a minimum risk for the safety of the patient. From this point of view, non-invasive sensors are definitely preferable to invasive sensors. On the other hand, for several applications, the insertion of optical sensors inside the human body cannot be avoided. In this case, very severe regulations must be satisfied in order to guarantee the safety of patients.

The key to safe and effective supplementary prescribing is the relationship between the individual independent prescriber and the individual supplementary prescriber (see Chapter 14).

In addition to these administrative responsibilities, the chief administrator is charged with controlling cost, complying with a multitude of governmental regulations, and ensuring that the hospital conforms to professional norms, which include guidelines for the care and safety of patients. 

The primary purpose of standards in chnical practice is to assure the safety of patient, operator, and bystanders. However, it must be fuUy appreciated that there is no such thing as absolute safety. The more safety features and regulations attached to a device, the less useful and the more cumbersome and costly maybe its actual use. In the development, interpretation, and use of a standard, there are questions that must be asked What is possible What is acceptable What is reasonable Who will benefit What is the cost Who will pay ... 

Solvents including water are still used in almost every step of the elaboration of a drug product. Their residues could be detrimental for the processability and stability of the pharmaceutical products and the safety of patients. At die end of this millennium it can be said that the testing and control of RS has been thoroughly assessed and is based on robust and sensitive techniques, for which the limitations are known, resulting in a sound strategy accepted almost everywhere in the world. 

A positive safety culture seems like a good idea. Surely to have a safety aware workforce, imbued with safety attitudes, open about error and so forth must be helpful But is there any evidence that changing the culture is likely to improve the quality of healthcare or the safety of patients A few years ago the answer to this was simply no, or at best only indirect evidence. Now however, a cadre of brave researchers undaunted by conceptual and methodological minefields have begun to address this issue. But it is difficult and there are no simple answers.
