To an experienced operator trained in the handling of industrial chemicals, the dimers present Httle cause for concern in handling or storage. It is important to make a list of every task that will be performed in the laboratory, down to the smallest detail. Operations such as pH measurements, transfer of flammables from safety storage to shelf bottles, or recording observations must not be overlooked. Even in a small laboratory, the number of individual tasks will be quite substantial. 

The authors [48] numerical data are collected in Table 67. They are valuable indications of the safety measures which should be observed in the storage, transportation and handling of hydrazine. It can be contained in vessels of glass and stainless steel, but under no circumstances in those made of iron. Aluminium containers are also acceptable. 

An account of a serious warehouse explosion (15 dead, 141 injured). The two principal detonations were mostly due to ammonium nitrate, of which some hundred tonnes had been present, but the initiating fire was first observed in ammonium persulfate. This had been promiscuously stored alongside potassium permanganate, matches, potassium nitrate and sodium sulphide (or possibly sulphite), inter alia. None of these would improve the safety of ammonium persulfate. It was shown that the persulphate gives an immediate exothermic reaction with the sulphide. This was ascribed as the ultimate initiation. It was concluded that oxidants and reducants should not be mixed in storage [many other oxidants, such as permanganates, should not be trusted near a peroxy compound - Ed.] and that storage areas should be better separated one from another.
