Saccharin composition

Ira Remsen, 1846-1927. Distinguished American chemist and professor of organic chemistry. President of The Johns Hopkins University. Author of excellent textbooks. Founder and editor of the American Chemical Journal. Friend of Sir William Ramsay. He investigated the composition of commercial saccharin. [Pg.783]

Nominal syrup ratio is 1 volume syrup plus 5.4 volumes water (15.625% syrup). Maximum concentration occurs when syrup quantity is +5% of target and water quantity is —5% of target, i.e. maximum drink composition is 1.05 volumes syrup plus 5.13 volumes water (16.99% syrup). Thus to ensure a maximum saccharin content of 80 mg/1 in the drink, the syrup must contain a maximum of (80 X 100)/16.99 mg/1 of saccharin, i.e. = 470.9 mg/1. [Pg.366]

The Weldon mud Manganschlamm ) is calculated as MnO-j, i.e., one uses the equivalent of exactly 100 grams of manganese dioxide. Weldon mud, a by-product of saccharin manufacture, has the approximate composition, MnsOi. [Pg.419]

Confections Confections are saccharine, soft solids, in which one or more medicinal substances are incorporated to provide an agreeable form of administration and a convenient method for preservation. In the thirteenth century, some apothecaries were called confectionarii from confectio meaning a composition. Confections are made by adding medicinal ingredients in either the form of a smooth paste, a fine powder, or a liquid to a basis of finely powdered sugar. Confection of Rose and Confection of Senna were official in the National Formulary through the 5th edition (1926).P 1... [Pg.954]

Based on its availability and structural nature, investigation of the " dehydrating power of o-sulfobenzoic acid anhydride (I) was carried out The parent add may be readily available as an intermediate in the synthesis of saccharin (5). The cyclic nature of this anhydride along with its half sulfonic/ half benzoic composition hinted to us that it may prove to be a suitable compound for the present isocyanate technology. [Pg.51]

Talc is in the same acceptance class as saccharin. It is another case of familiarity breeding acceptance. Talcum has never caused me a problem, why should it cause me a problem now It has been claimed for many years that some talcum powders contain several percent amphibole asbestos. This is strange because, as noted above, the chemical formulas of talc and chrysotile are very similar. Neither talc nor chrysotile are amphiboles. It would be expected that if talc were to contain a fibrous component it would be one of similar composition, but this is not the case. The structure of chrysotile is almost unbelievable and perhaps talc does not provide a proper environment for this crystal growth. [Pg.16]
