Another significant appHcation for amyl alcohols is for production of amyl acetates. Production of amyl acetates in 1987 is estimated to have been 4.5-5.5 X 10 t about 50% of the domestic demand is for lacquers (150). Union Carbide Chemicals and Plastics Company Inc. is the only U.S. producer.

Coatings and sealants for varied industrial applications are made by dissolving compounds of low-viscosity FKM elastomers, such as VITON C-10, VITON A-35, or FLUOREL 2145, in methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, amyl acetate, or other related ketones.47 Such products have typical useful storage life of 7 days at 24°C (75°F) and cure within 2 weeks.58 The subject of coatings and sealants based on fluoroelastomers is covered in more detail in Modern Fluoropoly-mers (Scheirs, J., Ed.), Chapter 23 (Ross Jr., E. Amyl acetates ate dangerous when ex posed to flame or heat. When heated they emit acrid fumes. Their explosive hazard is moderate(Ref 8). Toxicity is discussed in Refs 6 8. Ritter et al(Ref 3a) detd the temp at which mixts of air with satd vapor of amyl acetatefin contact with some of the liq) in a stoppered flask are explosive. Pressure of expln was also detd.
