Most applications of this compound are similar to those of the hydrochloride. It is primarily used as a reducing agent for organic synthesis and chemical analysis. Other uses are to purify aldehydes and ketones to inhibit oxidation of fatty acids in dehairing hides in synthesis of oximes for paints and varnishes in photographic developer solutions in rust proofing and as a catalyst. 

Several CDs applications have been discussed in Chapter 6. Their lack of toxicity forms the basis for their applications in pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and food industries as well as in toiletry and cosmetics [lb, lc]. They are also used or have been proposed to be applied, as sensitizers and stabilizers of dyes in photography, for impregnating paper, as fluorescent and other sensors [28], as corrosion inhibitors and rust proofing materials, UV stabilizers and antioxidants. One of the most spectacular is the prospective use of CDs as biodegradable plastics [29]. The complex of nitroglycerine with p-CDmarketed in Japan was mentioned in Chapter 1 while some other CDs applications have been presented in Chapter 6. 

J. T. Meckstroth 22 showed that the largest use for phosphoric acid is in sugar defecation. It is also used in the manufacture of jellies, preserves, and soft drinks in pharmaceutical preparations and in the rust-proofing of iron. The chief phosphates in industry are the calcium hydrophosphates used in making baking-powder, and self-rising flour sodium phosphates used in making boiler compounds, in laundry work, etc. The superphosphates are used in fertilizers. Calcium orthophosphate is the form of bone ash extensively used in the manufacture of bone china.

The greatest portion of the product is used in a variety of cleaning products, including substances for the bleaching and cleaning of wood, cork, cane, feathers, and natural and synthetic fibers. Many metal polishes, auto radiator cleaners, and laundry rinses also contain oxalic acid. Some rust-proofing materials also contain the compound. 

Weather and Corrosion Resistance Reoulrements. There are many commercial ways to "rust-proof" steel to make it weather resistant. They range from paint, which is usually the cheapest but least effective method, to chromeplating, which is one of the most expensive and effective methods. In between, in both cost... 

The built-in costs of corrosion of automobiles were identified as corrosion protection for steel body panels such as metallic zinc coatings, paint, adhesives and sealants, nonferrous metals, corrosion-resistant materials, rust-proofing heat exchanger components, mufflers, and tail pipe corrosion. The greatest impact on the cost of corrosion for automobiles was the adverse effect of corrosion on the cost of replacement of the automobile. Both the lO model and focused sector study showed that in both models the cost of replacement of the automobiles dominated the total cost and avoidable cost estimation. 

Rust proofing treatments of cars have not been very successful, and the Office of the Attorney General of New York State claimed that consumers were defrauded of 11 million annually because of poor quality rust treatments.
