To illustrate the results summarized in Table IX, some examples are discussed in detail. The large number of papers discussing the annular tautomerism of azoles (first column) is exemplified by the studies concerning benzotriazole (57). Wofford, Forkey, and Russell, using pyrazoles and imi-... [Pg.37]

A radical polymerization involves free radical ends which of course do not associate and which interact only weakly with solvents. Consequently, the early investigators assumed that the course of propagation of radical polymerization is independent of the environment (see, for example, the recent monograph by Walling60). Actually, more recent studies, notably by Russell,36 showed that the nature of the solvent sometimes might considerably affect even the course of radical reactions. Therefore, unusual behavior of the propagation step might be expected in certain solvents. [Pg.159]

In studies on the para-hydrogen conversion rate on nickel and its alloys with copper other authors also noted the poisoning effect of the sorbed hydrogen. Singleton (53) mentioned the poisoning of nickel film catalysts by the slow-sorbed hydrogen. Shallcross and Russell (54) observed a similar phenomenon for nickel and its alloys with copper at — 196°C. At higher... [Pg.271]

Radical induced grafting may be carried out in solution, in the melt phase,292 29 or as a solid state process.296 This section will focus on melt phase grafting to polyolefin substrates but many of the considerations are generic. The direct grafting of monomers onto polymers, in particular polyolefins, in the melt phase by reactive extrusion has been widely studied. Most recently, the subject has been reviewed by Moad1 9 and by Russell.292 More details on reactive extrusion as a technique can be found in volumes edited by Xanthos," A1 Malaika and Baker et a 21 7 The process most often involves combining a frcc-radical initiator (most commonly a peroxide) and a monomer or macromonomer with the polyolefin as they are conveyed through the extruder. Monomers commonly used in this context include MAII (Section 7.6.4.1), maleimidc derivatives and malcate esters (Section 7.6.4.2), (meth)acrylic acid and (meth)acrylate esters (Section 7.6.43), S, AMS and derivatives (Section 7.6.4.4), vinylsilancs (Section 7.6.4.5) and vinyl oxazolines (Section 7.6.4.6). [Pg.390]

The binary pulsar PSR1913+16. In 1974 Russell Hulse and Joseph Taylor discovered a very special pulsar PSR1916+13. A striking feature that was revealed just after its discovery was a large shift of the pulses rate with a period of a few hours. This was explained by Doppler shift, so PSR1916-H13 is in fact a binary system in which a pulsar orbits about the center of mass of the system. Thanks to the presence of this very stable local clock, Hulse and Taylor were able to obtain all the orbital parameters of this system. By studying the variations of those parameters over nearly twenty years, they... [Pg.312]

Pharmacokinetic studies demonstrated good oral bioavailability of maraviroc and a terminal half-life of 16-23 h following multiple dosing (Abel et al. 2003 Walker et al. 2005). Single doses of up to 900 mg and multiple doses of up to 300 mg BID for 28 days were well tolerated (Abel et al. 2003 Russell et al. 2003 Walker et al. 2005). In Phase 2a studies, treatment-naive HIV-1 patients with R5 virus who received maraviroc monotherapy at doses ranging from 25 mg QD to 300 mg BID for 10 days experienced a median viral load reduction of 1.64 log jg copies/mL and... [Pg.188]

Rupture of fractal (flocculated) aggregates of polystyrene latices in simple shear flow and converging flow was studied by Sonntag and Russel (1986, 1987b). The flow patterns in liquid-liquid systems have not been as extensively studied as those in gas-liquid systems. However, Russell et al. (R6), and Charles et al. (C3) have studied the flow of oils and water in horizontal pipes and have presented flow-pattern charts for the various oil-water systems. It is very difficult to predict the flow pattern for a liquid-liquid system, unless the liquids have physical properties similar to those of water and the oils used by Govier and co-workers. The Baker chart might be used to give a first estimate of the flow pattern for a liquid-liquid system, but the viscosity of the less-dense phase is not included in the coordinate parameters, and the feasibility of such an approach has never been investigated. [Pg.18]

The application of Eqs. (17) requires a detailed knowledge of the two-phase hydrodynamics so that the parameters Ru Wc, U,a, U a, Vd, a, and Qt can be evaluated. The fluid dynamics of annular flows have been investigated experimentally. Russell and Lamb (R4) have studied the flow mechanism of horizontal annular flow Cousins et at. (C8) have dealt with droplet movement in vertical annular flow. Anderson and Russell (A6) have analyzed the interchange of droplets in horizontal systems, and numerous other hydrodynamic studies have been reported in Hewitt et al. (HI). Cichy et al. (C4) have reviewed the methods for evaluating the same hydrodynamic parameters that are also used in mass transfer studies. It is difficult to... [Pg.26]

Carotenoid absorption and metabolism have been comprehensively reviewed (Erdman et al., 1993 Parker, 1996 van Vliet, 1996 Furr and Clark, 1997 Yeum and Russell, 2002) and this chapter will focus only on recent advances in these areas. A particular emphasis will be placed on studies that used in vitro and cell culture models as tools to understand better the mechanisms of absorption on the molecular level. [Pg.369]

The hemolymphal transport of carotenoids by lipophorin has been elucidated and documented (Law and Wells 1989, Tsuchida et al. 1998, Arrese et al. 2001, Canavoso et al. 2001), as has plasma transport by mammalian lipoproteins (Paker 1996, Yeum and Russell 2002). Lipophorin serves as a shuttle that moves carotenoids from one tissue to another without itself entering the cells, in stark contrast to the vertebrate low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (Brown and Goldstein 1986), which is endocytosed and metabolized in the cell. Here, we focus on the recent biochemical and genetic studies of the intracellular CBP of the silkworm, which mainly transports lutein. We hope this review provides insights into the studies of CBPs in other organisms. [Pg.512]

SRN I reactions using related p-nitrophenyl or p-nitrocumyl systems41 as reductive alkylating agents have been studied by Komblum and co-workers these are well summarized in the reviews.39 At the same time, Russell discovered the S l reaction of geminal halonitroalkanes with stabilized carbanions (see Eq. 5.25).42 The products are readily converted into alkenes via elimination of nitro groups (see Section 7.3). [Pg.134]
