It is then up to society to educate itself while being cautious before rushing into new advances. Our present procedure of educating individuals so as to continue our inheritance is quite different from genetic inheritance. Previous organisms were largely restricted to patterns of behaviour by genes in closely knit populations, but today we face a quite different problem, that of the individual, which introduces a hazard of a quite novel kind, which only education can rectify. 

While some contemporary alchemists such as Hunter, Emmens, Jollivet-Castelot, and Ayton had indeed tried to make gold, Ramsay s attempted transmutations led to a rush toward a different kind of treasure scientific immortality. Multiple chemists pursued the same kinds of experiments that Ramsay had, believing that they too had found positive results. They attempted to position themselves within the scientific world as the first to have proven artificial transmutation. Between 1907, when Ramsay announced his supposed copper transmutations in Nature, and 1914, when he abandoned his efforts, several significant chemists (including J. N. Collie, Hubert Patterson, E. C. C. Baly, Thomas Merton, Irvine Masson, and A. C. G. Egerton) all participated in experiments to use either radium emanation or cathode rays and X-rays to cause chemical transmutation. 

An example of the kind of thinking of 18th century physicians that could lead to such ineffective or positively harmful recommendations is Benjamin Rush s treatment of the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia in 1793 (see Powell, 1949). Dr. Rush was one of the most highly respected physicians in North America in the 18th century. 

This problem is also linked with the question of single and cumulative doses, which vary widely in different studies [15]. Should the cumulative dose be reached within a short period or may it be more effective if it is distributed for a longer time span Should therapy be abolished when symptoms decreased or disappeared or should it also be continued during additional symptom-free seasons The answers probably depend again upon several factors, such as the kind of allergens. Short-term therapies similar to subcutaneous rush therapies were tried out, but results are still very limited [16].

It is true that not many of these conditions are known, but it certainly is not impossible that some of these conditions can be produced in the plant where the explosive is manufactured. It is no more impossible that TXT -will explode under conditions concerning which we know nothing. These conditions may just as well be brought about as the first kind. To be on the safe side, then, it is up to the superintendent of a plant to be certain that no conditions exist in his plant but those imder which it is definitely known that TXT win not explode. This -will insure the safety of the men, and the safety of the plant.
