Reinforced elastomers are one of the oldest and most important classes of composite materials (Ruffell, 1952 Sellers and Toonder, 1965 Stern, 1968, p. 278). When the automobile first became popular, the need to toughen tire rubber, especially against abrasion, became obvious. Although zinc oxide had already attained widespread use as a rubber colorant, in 1905 Ditmar realized the true importance of this material as a reinforcing agent for rubber. Many industry veterans can still remember when tires had white treads. However, such tire treads usually lasted less than 5000 miles, and the need for further improvements was imperative. [Pg.299]

Rubber-mill chips are dissolved similarly to resins, to provide color concentrates. Dough mixer and chip concentrates must be diluted with solvent and other vehicles to make finished inks. Media milling is becoming a method of choice in both flexo and gravure ink manufacturing. Other high speed dispersing units, such as the Morehouse, Cowles, Kady, and others, are also used. [Pg.251]

There are several systems that define the quality and uniformity of natural mbber. One system of grading natural mbber is based on form and visual observation of color and cleanliness. This is known as the International Natural Rubber Specification. The principal types and grades are as follows. There are five other types of mbber classified by this system and many other grades not Hsted here. [Pg.231]

Vulcan Fast Red GF (734), a bisazopyrazolone pigment, has been developed primarily for the coloration of rubber (B-70MI40403). [Pg.299]

Two-roll mills are used rnainlv for preparing color pastes for the ink, paint, and coating industries. There are a few applications in heaw-diitv blending of rubber stocks, for which corrugated and masticating rolls are often used. [Pg.1647]

A cork and not a rubber stopper should be used during the refluxing, as rubber stoppers will cause the product to be colored. [Pg.47]

Other natural product-based resins also became widely used, such as the light colored Lewis acid oligomerized products of terpenes such as a-pinene, p-pinene, and limonene. These natural product resins are relatively expensive, however, and formulators now often use the newer, less expensive synthetic resins in present day natural rubber PSAs. These are termed the aliphatic or C-5 resins and are Lewis acid oligomerized streams of predominately C-5 unsaturated monomers like cis- and /rawi-piperylene and 2-methyl-2-butenc [37]. These resins are generally low color products with compatibility and softening points similar to the natural product resins. Representative products in the marketplace would be Escorez 1304 and Wingtack 95. In most natural rubber PSA formulations, rubber constitutes about 100 parts and the tackifier about 75-150 parts. [Pg.478]
