They may also act as reactive super plasticisers to increase rubber flow while increasing the mechanical properties of the rubber. Viscosity reduction or polymer solvation and higher filler loading can be accomplished with less plasticiser. Flow is achieved through molecular rearrangement and not average molecular weight reduction of the rubber.

Rubber viscosity can be measured by a rotational viscometer, a capillary rheometer, or an oscillating rheometer. These are discussed later in the chapter.

The surfaces must attain microscopic contact to allow interpenetration of chains via diffusion. This surface wetting depends on the surface roughness and the rubber viscosity. 

When the crosslinking level is low, the rubber viscosity may increase, but not be high enough for rubber to break down. In such cases the rubber remains a continuous phase and the morphology is not well defined (Figure 3.24) 4].

While some of these products stayed competitive (rubbers, viscose fibres), others - especially in the field of thermoplastic material applications - did not, mainly for economic reasons or insufficient properties but sometimes also due to high enviromnental costs. 

Emulsion polymerization (ESBR)—via free radical polymerization. Makes a random copolymer. The material has some long chain branching. This is an economical way of making this type of rubber. Viscosity is not a problem, since the emulsion does not change viscosity. 

The advantages of CV rubbers in facilitating the preparation of rubber solutions are clear but it should be appreciated that for a given concentration, a solution prepared from an unmasticated rubber such as a CV grade will be more viscous than when prepared from a harder rubber masticated to the same rubber viscosity (Table 4).
