Cd ion-selective electrodes The usual version of the Cd " ISE contains a membrane of a sintered or pressed mixture of CdS and Ag2 S [121, 325,408]. Membranes from sintered Ag2S, CuS and CdS mixtures [157] have also been proposed, similarly as forPb ISEs. CdS precipitate in a polyethylene matrix [250] or a CdS-Ag2S precipitate mixture in a silicone rubber matrix [153] can also be used for Cd ISEs. Cd ISEs can be calibrated using a metal diethylenetriamine buffer [66]. Similar substances interfere in the response of the Cd ISE as for the Hg, Ag and Cu electrodes. [Pg.147]

In the electrode with CuS alone, which has negligible conductivity, the precipitate ISE with a silicone rubber matrix has better properties than the electrode with a pressed pellet [314], The ISE with a mixture of CuS and Agi S finds broad application [325]. Songmin et al. reported the preparation of chitosan hydrochloric acid salt and the effect in improving the dispersion of carbon nanotubes in different solvents and silicone rubber. It was also found that treated carbon nanotubes could be dispersed in the silicone rubber homogeneously based on SEM and XRD analysis. The incorporation of carbon nanotubes enhanced the thermal stability of the silicone rubber. They also significantly improved the mechanical properties of the silicone rubber matrix. From the FTIR spectra, it was befieved that chitosan hydrochloric acid salt adsorbed on the surface of the carbon nanotube and then interacted with silicone rubber matrix, resulting in the enhancement of dispersion of carbon nanotubes, improving thermal and mechanical properties in the resulting nanocomposites [124]. [Pg.181]

The mold is then closed and a specified amount of heat, pressure, and time are applied, forming chemical cross-links within the rubber matrix. This is the phenomenon of curing rubber. Later, the liquid state measuring membrane was changed by an elastic plastic disk. This made the electrode form mechanically more stable. In the early times, well working potassium [16] and ammonium [17] ISEs were made with a silicon rubber matrix. Later, however, plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) matrices became the most popular in ISE fabrication. Their preparation procedure was well worked out and clearly described by Shatkay [18] and Thomas [19], The high molecular weight PVC used in membrane preparation can be dissolved in tetrahydrofurane. In this solution, the plasticizer, the selective ionophore, and other ingredients like special lipophilic salt are dissolved. The solution is transferred into a ring-shaped flat bottomed mold. Care is taken to let the tetrahydro furane (THE) slowly evaporate. In a few days, a circular, flexible membrane is obtained. A disk with appropriate diameter is cut from the membrane and pasted on the tubular electrode body. [Pg.182]
