Royal Air Force

The jet engine was invented independently by two people Frank Whittle in England and Dr. Hans von Ohain in Germany. In 1928, as a student at the Royal Air Force technical college at Cranwell, Frank Wliittle wrote a senior thesis entitled Future... 

The award of a Beit Memorial Fellowship for medical research in 1933 provided him with more financial security and independence. Stacey moved to London and for the next 3 years worked full-time in Raistrick s laboratory. He was given the task of working on vaccines against typhoid fever. The work was successful eventually and the vaccines were used by the Royal Air Force and also were sent to the Air Force in New Zealand. Also, some advances were made in studies of the carbohydrate components of the vaccines. In addition to this research, he completed, by part-time study, the diploma course in bacteriology.

Historical accounts of military conflicts since the First World War lead us to believe that the use of chemical weapons was non-existent for legal or ethical reasons, or for fear of retaliation. Matthew Meselson, a noted biochemist, stated, There have been only two instances of verified poison gas warfare since 1925. .. in Ethiopia and Yemen. 5 However, a preponderance of evidence exists to indicate that there have been numerous instances of chemical warfare use in military conflicts since 1918. In 1919, in India, stocks of phosgene and mustard gas were sent out from Britain for use on the frontier, and the Royal Air Force (RAF) is alleged to have used gas bombs against the Afghans in 1920. By 1925 the French and Spanish were employing poison gas in Morocco, and it had become clear that chemical warfare had found a new role, as a tool by which major powers could police rebellious territories.

The Houdry units greatly increased both the quality and the yield of gasoline per barrel of crude, and during World War II high octane Houdry gasoline propelled the Royal Air Force to victory in the battle of Britain. 

Thus the actual British forces present in the area are considerably stronger than ours. On the other hand, our ability to reinforce our air and naval forces quickly is considerably greater than theirs, since our Atlantic Fleet is much stronger than the British Home Fleet, and our air forces at home are quite a lot stronger than the permanent establishment of the Royal Air Force in Great Britain. However, despite the British government s earlier tax on imported oil (1928), and the Hydrocarbon Oil Act (1934), the project only proved its worth during World War II, when Billingham fuel, made from creosote oil, was used by the Royal Air Force. Then, as in Germany, normal market forces that would have made the process uneconomic no longer applied.
