Rosin purification

It was not until the twentieth century that furfural became important commercially. The Quaker Oats Company, in the process of looking for new and better uses for oat hulls found that acid hydrolysis resulted in the formation of furfural, and was able to develop an economical process for isolation and purification. In 1922 Quaker announced the availability of several tons per month. The first large-scale appHcation was as a solvent for the purification of wood rosin. Since then, a number of furfural plants have been built world-wide for the production of furfural and downstream products. Some plants produce as Httie as a few metric tons per year, the larger ones manufacture in excess of 20,000 metric tons. 

Process Sequence. The process sequence consists of recovery of tall oil soap from the pulping blackhquor, acidulation, ie, conversion of the soap into CTO with sulfuric acid, fractional distillation to separate rosin, and fatty acids and purification of the fatty acid fraction.

To poly(caprolactone) (PCL), in the side chains, rosin esters have been grafted by a combination of a ring-opening polymerization and click chemistry (2). The rosin moieties can be effectively grafted to each repeat unit of the caprolactone. This S5mthesis does not require a sophisticated purification of the raw renewable biomass. 

Acetone is used to extract fats, oils, waxes, and resins from natural products, to dewax lubricating oils, and to extract certain essential oils. The pharmaceutical industry uses acetone to extract B-vitamin complexes, alkaloids, antibiotics and enzymes. Methyl ethyl ketone is used to dewax lube oil. Methyl isobutyl ketone is used to dewax mineral oil, refine tall oil, and in extractive distillation and separation of isopropyl alcohol from ethyl and butyl alcohols. The extraction and purification of antibiotics and other pharmaceutical products utilize MIBK. Methyl isobutyl ketone is used in the extraction of rosin from pine wood and the extraction of heavy metal ion complexes from water solutions.
