Rocket engines propulsion efficiency

The field of propulsion deals with the means by which aircraft, missiles, and spacecraft are propelled toward their destinations. Subjects of development include propellers and rotors driven by internal combustion engines or jet engines, rockets powered by solid- or liquid-fueled engines, spacecraft powered by ion engines, solar sails or nuclear reactors, and matter-antimatter engines. Propulsion system metrics include thrust, power, cycle efficiency, propulsion efficiency, specific impulse, and thrust-specific fuel consumption. Advances in this field have enabled hiunanity to travel across the world in a few hours, visit space and the Moon, and send probes to distant planets. [Pg.1527]

Section A gives a concise history of the development of rockets and air flow jet engines. Section B gives definitions of thrust and various efficiencies and-derives relationships for the performance of the different jet propulsion systems. Section C gives the performance analysis of turbojets based on the internal solution of matching the compressor, combustor, turbine, and nozzle. It includes a discussion of off-design performance and describes the problems of... [Pg.526]

Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles for practical purposes. Engineering is subdivided into many disciplines aU create new products and make existing products or systems work more efficiently, faster, safer, or at less cost. The products of engineering are ubiquitous and range from the familiar, such as microwave ovens and sound systems in movie theaters, to the complex, such as rocket propulsion systems and genetic engineering. [Pg.659]
