Risk management professional meetings

Professionals can spend a large amount of time in meetings. Many risk management issues— particularly in the area of safety— require team input and consensus, and such input and consensus usually requires that those involved get together in a meeting. Therefore, the effectiveness with which a professional can carry out his or her work depends, to a considerable degree, on the manner in which he or she participates in meetings and is able to lead multidisciplinary discussions. 

The safety professional has become the liaison between all the various departments within a trucking company. It has become our, many times unrecognized, responsibility to assist and help such departments as the sales and marketing team understand and meet capacity the human resources department to ensure that employees are treated fairly while ensuring company objectives are met and the CEO and financial team to understand asset protection and the risk management decision making process. 

Encompassing a hierarchy of controls within a sound problem-solving technique furthers the ability of management and safety professionals to achieve effective risk reduction, and to meet the requirements of certain provisions in ZIO. Adopting well-established problem-solving techniques to address hazard and risk situations is a fundamentally sound approach. That is the purpose of The Safety Decision Hierarchy. 

For moderate-sized locations, I strongly recommend that safety professionals consider drafting and proposing the implementation of a pre-job planning and safety analysis system as the implementation method to fulfill the Management of Change Policy and Procedures drafted to meet the requirements in ZIO. The purpose of a pre-job planning and safety analysis system is to provide a means for supervisors and their staffs to determine how the work is to be done and to study the hazards and risks that may be encountered—before the work commerces.
