Risk and safety phrases

The letter R refers to risk phrases and S denotes safety phrases. A list of the relevant phrases are found in Manufacturers catalogues. A combination of risk and safety phrases is also included. It is therefore necessary for students to be familiar with these phrases. Some prepared complexes whose potential risk has not been ascertained should be handled with extra care. Hence all precautions taken with the other harmful chemicals should be adhered to and any harmful effects reported to the staff supervising the work.

Requirements for labelling of containers for supply may differ from those for conveyance. Key features of a supply label are to identify the substance (the chemical name in most cases) and any hazards and safety precuations. In Europe the classification, packaging and labelling of dangerous substances is covered by Directive 67/548/EEC as amended. This requires labels to identify appropriate risk and safety phrases (Tables 12.2 and 12.3) depending upon product properties. A substance is considered dangerous if in Part lA of an approved list or if it exhibits hazardous properties as defined in Schedule 1 for supply, or Schedule 2 for conveyance as shown in Tables 12.4 and 12.5. Substances not tested should be labelled Caution — substance not yet fully tested . Criteria for risk phrases are provided, e.g. as in Table 12.6 for toxic compounds.

Specify relevant risk and safety phrases for the protection of the environment, which are to be included on labels. 

For these, where they are not to be consumed immediately, the secondary container should carry the brand name, trade name, code name or code number specified by the supplier of the hazardous substance, and the risk and safety phrases which apply to the hazardous substance. 

CHIP specifies what has to go on to the label including where it must be displayed, the size of the label, name and address of supplier, name of the substance, risk and safety phrases and indications of danger with symbols. 

These symbols, usually printed black on an orange background, are standard across Europe for indicating hazards (HSE, 2009). A hazard symbol will normally be accompanied with risk and safety phrases summarizing the hazard and appropriate action. This system will be replaced by a worldwide system in 2015 (see Appendix 2.4).
