Noryl is a rigid dimensionally stable material. Dimensional stabiUty results from a combination of low mold shrinkage, low coefficient of thermal expansion (5.9 x 10 per° C), good creep resistance (0.6—0.8% in 300 h at 13.8 MPa (2000 psi)), and the lowest water absorption rate of any of the engineering thermoplastics (0.07% in 24 h at room temperature). Noryl resins are completely stable to hydrolysis. They are not affected by aqueous acids or bases and have good resistance to some organic solvents, but they are attacked by aromatic or chlorinated aUphatic compounds. [Pg.331]

Photochromism Based on Triplet Formation. Upon absorption of light, many polycycHc aromatic hydrocarbons and their heterocycHc analogues undergo transitions to their triplet state which has an absorption spectmm different from that of the ground state (24). Plasticizers. Plasticizers are materials that soften and flexibilize inherently rigid, and even britde polymers. Organic esters are widely used as plasticizers in polymers (97,98). These esters include the benzoats, phthalates, terephthalates, and trimeUitates, and aUphatic dibasic acid esters. Eor example, triethylene glycol bis(2-ethylbutyrate) [95-08-9] is a plasticizer for poly(vinyl butyral) [63148-65-2] which is used in laminated safety glass (see Vinyl POLYMERS, poly(vinyl acetals)). Di(2-ethyUiexyl)phthalate [117-81-7] (DOP) is a preeminent plasticizer. Variation of acid and/or alcohol component(s) modifies the efficacy of the resultant ester as a plasticizer. In phthalate plasticizers, molecular sizes of the alcohol moiety can be varied from methyl to tridecyl to control permanence, compatibiUty, and efficiency branched (eg, 2-ethylhexyl, isodecyl) for rapid absorption and fusion linear (C6—Cll) for low temperature flexibiUty and low volatility and aromatic (benzyl) for solvating. Terephthalates are recognized for their migration resistance, and trimeUitates for their low volatility in plasticizer appHcations. [Pg.396]

Aminos. There are two basic types of amino plastics - urea formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde. They are hard, rigid materials with good abrasion resistance and their mechanical characteristics are sufficiently good for continuous use at moderate temperatures (up to 100°C). Urea formaldehyde is relatively inexpensive but moisture absorption can result in poor dimensional stability. It is generally used for bottle caps, electrical switches, plugs, utensil handles and trays. Melamine formaldehyde has lower water absorption and improved temperature and chemical resistance. Two types of the homopolymer are available, the flexible and the rigid. Both types have excellent chemical and abrasion resistance. The flexible types are produced with high porosity to permit plasticizer absorption. Articles made from the rigid type are hard and cannot be stretched more than 40% of their original length. Parker [55] studied the IN properties of MEH-PPV sandwiched between various low-and high work-function materials. He proposed a model for such photodiodes, where the charge carriers are transported in a rigid band model. Electrons and holes can tunnel into or leave the polymer when the applied field tilts the polymer bands so that the tunnel barriers can be overcome. It must be noted that a rigid band model is only appropriate for very low intrinsic carrier concentrations in MEH-PPV. Capacitance-voltage measurements for these devices indicated an upper limit for the dark carrier concentration of 1014 cm"3. Further measurements of the built in fields of MEH-PPV sandwiched between metal electrodes are in agreement with the results found by Parker. Electro absorption measurements [56, 57] showed that various metals did not introduce interface states in the single-particle gap of the polymer that pins the Schottky contact. Of course this does not imply that the metal and the polymer do not interact [58, 59] but these interactions do not pin the Schottky barrier. [Pg.278]
