Crocidolite This mineral name was originally proposed in 1831 for what was thought to be a distinct mineral, but was later shown to be a fibrous variety in the amphibole mineral series riebeckite-magnesioriebeckite. Crocidolite continues in trade use and, to some extent, in mineralogical and biomediccd scientific use. [Pg.193]

Industrial Talc, Asbestos-free n Industrial talc of which less than two particles per 100 particles are asbestos, where asbestos fiber is defined as being both by a fiber by ASTM D 2946 and one of the asbestiform varieties of serpentine, riebeckite, cummingtonite (which are chrysotile, crocidolite and amosite, respectively), anthopyllite, tremolite, or actinolite. The non-asbestiform varieties of these same materials are not asbestos. [Pg.386]

Whereas fibers of chrysotile resemble rolls of newspapers when viewed as a cross section of fibers, crocidolite is an amphibole and its fibers are laves with a trapezoidal cross section. As mentioned, this behavior is related to the cross-linked double chains of silicate from which these fibers are formed. Like [NaCa(P03)3]n which is grown as single crystals and must be milled to be converted to fibers, crocidolite is not a natural fiber as it is mined. It must be milled before it is cleaved to fibers. Unmilled crocidolite mineral is a beautiful stone known as either Cat s eye or Tiger s eye. It is also known as Riebeckite Asbestos. ... [Pg.104]
