In the 1987 Regulations, asbestos is defined as any of the following minerals crocidolite, amosite, chrysotile, fibrous anthophyllite, fibrous actinolite, fibrous tremolite and any mixture containing any of these. Before carrying out work on any substance suspected of being asbestos, a competent person must be called to advise on its possible... [Pg.1065]

Even more complicated chemical formulas result when some silicon atoms have one outer oxygen atom, whereas others in the same mineral have two outer oxygen atoms. The asbestos minerals—one is crocidolite,... [Pg.618]

Since ferrous iron usually colors minerals green, and ferric iron yellow or brown, it may seem rather remarkable that the presence of both together should give rise to a blue color, as in the case of vivianite. It may be pointed out, however, that this is by no means a unique instance of such an effect. Even apart from the artificial substances, Prussian and Turnbull s blues, which are complex cyanides containing both ferric and ferrous iron, there are several blue minerals in which the color seems explainable only on this basis. The most noteworthy of these are crocidolite and related amphiboles iolite and the blue tourmaline or indicolite. Other instances may perhaps be discovered, should this subject ever be investigated as it deserves to be . [Pg.154]

Optical microscope asbestos reference standards for use in identifying and quantifying asbestos types are available both from NIST and the Institute of Occupational Medicine flOM) in Edinburgh, Scotland. The lOM materials consists of various asbestos materials actinolite, amosite, anthophyUite, chrysotile (both from Cassiar, Canada and Zimbabwe), crocidolite and tremoUte. [Pg.199]

The NIST material SRM 1866a consists of a set of three common bulk mine-grade asbestos materials chrysotile, amosite and crocidolite, and one glass filter sample. SRM 1867 consists of a set of three imcommon mine-grade asbestos materials antophyllite, tremolite and actinohte. The optical properties of SRMs 1866a and 1867 have been characterized so that they may serve as primary calibration standards for the identification of asbestos types in building materials. [Pg.199]
